Starter motor removal.

Just a quickie, is it possible to change the starter motor via the engine hatch rather than lying in a puddle underneath the van?

Should have done it sooner but there you go!

I don't think so. The top bolt is best done from the engine bay, but the other bolt and the cables need you lying underneath. And I don't think the motor itself would come out through the engine bay. Are you changing the bush at the same time? That was a condition of the warranty with the one I bought, although I'm sure they'd never know. If you are, you'll certainly not be able to do that from above.

No I'd say. Too awkward, although I've often wondered if creating an access hatch wouldn't be useful. You can get to so much, but not the connectors.

Get the offside wheel up on the pavement should be enough your not a fat lad

Darn it! No fear of dropping it in a puddle, I'm not that desperate to get wet and cold especially as I've got a spare van. Thanks for the replies.

If you had a diesel you could do this. But as you haven't then I can't answer your question.

If you take the wheel off you can do it through the wheel arch.

I did mine from the top it was a bit footery but got it in the end . I only did it that way because I had parked next to a wall at my house and couldn't move the van

I'll wait for a dry period and attempt it from the top for the sake of it. If that fails me, then I'll go down under. Bring on the sun!

If it proves so awkward that the lord's name is taken in vain repeatedly, then I'll follow those that have been before me and get underneath. It's interesting when someone goes against the tide and achieves what is reputedly not possible.

I'm not trying to make work for myself, I would've liked to have had a go tonight but this was never going to happen from the exterior - still raining now & now & now, still raining........

No prizes for doing it the hard way
Its only two bolts one has to be done from above but the lower bolt and the connections are much easier from under
5 minuite job for a man with your skills

Could have done it in the time you toook to log on here

Actually I'm with you here. Nowt worse than scrabbling underneath if its wet out. Its just easier from underneath from a practical point of view. Just wait until ground is dry, then have a go.
