Mystery light!

Post by timjwharton »

IMG_0304.jpg

Hi all,

Can anyone tell me what this light is (see photo)? I've had the van over ten years and it's only ever come on and flashed when the hazards are on. This morning it's decided to be on all the time, and neither the indicators nor the hazards work. (The green light in the dash comes on by doesn't flash...)

I've changed out the fuses and no change.

Please bear in mind that my technical ability pretty much ends at changing the fuse!

Thanks,

Tim

Never seen a light by there before!

It's not some sort of aftermarket immobiliser/alarm is it?

Expect it has or had a towbar fitted.
Then it would be for a trailer warning light comes on when the indicators are working on the trailer, also when the hazards flash.

Could be a faulty relay or hazard switch try rocking the hazard switch slowly to see if they come on at a certain position.

Thanks guys! Yes, it has a tow bar with electrics. (Never used it, though...)
Will try the rocking thing tomorrow and let you know.
Sheesh, there's never a dull moment with these, is there?

@bigherb,

Did as you suggested. When the hazard switch was in the 'half on-half off' position, there was a funny noise in the fuse box. Flicked it a few times and the mystery light has gone off and the indicators are working again.

Thanks for that.

Mine had a tow bar indicator light, it would flash once without a tow and keep flashing with a tow. So it sounds as above like a tow bar indicator light.

I also however had a rewired oil light as the main one had stopped working.

I'd guess that the hazard light relay got stuck and the rapid on/off you heard when the switch was in the half way position got it moving again. Did you notice if when the light was on if the indicators where lit up too (but not flashing)?

Hi,

Yes, the light was on when the indicator green light was on (not flashing). All seems to be back to normal now...
