Might be worth taking the gearbox off to be sure its not that

another possibility as its noisier on tge left hand head is the gudgeon circlip has come off, i have read this can make a loud noise as it scores the barrel

second hand dg on fleabay at a reasonable price for ond that can be seen running and hasnt been in a shed for years

Thanks. Thinking things over re van. Considering calling it a day. If I was going to spend serious money it'd be for a 2.1 or a more modern engine trsnsplant but the mrs is fed up!

You could be right. Found similar noises coming from other t25 engines on youtube all related to lifter/valve wear/lubrication. I'll update when |know the answer

Take the rocker covers off and go through the basic rocker setting procedure in haynes, it will tell you if you have alot of movement in one rocker, id expect a duff tappet to be noisy at idle also
is it still quiet in idle?
also remove plugs and inspect in case one has disintegrated, this can happen with very lean running

Just started van up - sounds perfect in idle the clacking starts as the engine is warm. The manifold to exhaust gasket is blowing so I've ordered a replacement but I'm not expecting it to do solve this and I'm off to get the right sized socket to pull the spark plugs. I've re read the haynes on adjusting the tappets but I'm not clear on which lifters relate to which number cylinder (on the LH side of the engine looking at the engine from the back). The garages I've spoken to are talking about rebuilding the engine which is a bit alarming. I'll see if Elite in Basildon will help out as it's just within 2 years and only done about 8k since the rebuild.

OK LH side looking from the back is cylinders 3 ( towards the front of the vehicle) and 4 ( towards the rear)

the tappets and valves in the centre are inlet, the ones to the outside are exhaust.

you really want to find out how much preload there is so rather that just loosening them count the number of turns until loose.

also worth dropping the oil through a fine strainer and seeing if any lumps of metal, or swarf get caught, you can always pour the oil back in

Going to take it down to a trusted garage on Monday that I've used for the car for years. They don't rebuild engines so have no vested interest but will check out the tappets and see if they can make a diagnosis if it's more serious. Fingers crossed for a duff tappet. If it's more serious I'll phone the rebuilders again.

E D I T: Garage has ruled out tappets etc - they think its a little end problem but engine needs to come out either way. Going back to Elite next week for repair

Got it down to Elite on a low loader. Turns out it's the automatic drive plate that's cracked in case anyone else has the same symptoms. AA had said big end and local garage said small end! Now after an automatic drive plate, there was one for ages on Ebay and I nearly got it just in case.

I think I have one believe it or not
Bolts in place of flywheel right and also to torque convertor?
Happy to swap for a flywheel or similar £ as its on my spare engine
