Gearbox oil leak :-(

Post by Flyingchunk »

Hi all.

After successfully fixing a breather pipe and and fault finding my non starting van to a duff rotor arm, I'm hoping to make it 3 for 3!

Here is the problem...

Image

It's obviously from the gearbox, as the small (and thankfully it is small at the moment, no more than 20-30ml max) puddle of oil smells like cat pee.

What is it?

How do I fix it?

The gearbox was changed last year, so I assume they changed the seals.

Anyone any ideas?

Thanks in advance. :ok

Ooooo!

I pray for tightening!

If it's replacing, I guess its a "drain and do"?

Thanks for the quick reply. Couldn't find anything in the Haynes or Wiki.

Took 1/4 of a turn, so hope that's done it.

Jizered the area so it'll be clear if it's not stopped.

Thanks so much for the help. Don't know where I'd be without this forum.

One day I hope I can answer some questions!

Cheers :ok

Ok. It's still leaking slightly. I think I read somewhere its a 22mm socket, so shall I get a washer and try that or just go for it and buy a new one?

The reverse lights are now also on all the time. So I guess a washer is the answer anyway.

Sounds like the switch needs the sealing washer under it to work at the correct set point. Dont over tighten it or you will shear it off

Yes. Will a bog standard fibre or rubber washer do it? Or do I need some specialist item?

Bought a red fibre washer, seems to have done the trick.

Although...getting the tightness right to the point where the reverse lights actually went on, then when I took it out of reverse...went off, was a bit nervy as it seemed to require a lot of torque.

It has to be.... Just right!

After then topping up the box with Wilco GL4 oil, I found out I had actually lost 1/2 litre through this tiny leak.

Scary! Already had to get 1 new box through no oil. Never again.
