Garage recommendation for engine work

Post by mike9009 »

Hi

My T25 is burning oil, losing power and misfiring. It can still be driven. I have been informed it is likely to be the bores or rings by a local non-specialist garage (they do many classics though.....) They are not really interested in taking the work further due to other commitments ( I prefer to know this in advance!!

I live on the Isle of Wight and looking for a recommendation for a garage locally (ideally Portsmouth, Southampton or IOW) that would take on this work - whatever it may require. I want to keep the original spec - so no wild upgrades...

I have found 'Bugs and Buses' in Southsea but can't find any information on them?

Many thanks

Mike

My van is a 1981 2.0 litre Aircooled (if it makes a difference??)

It makes a massive difference
Determining what the problem is, must be the first inspection.
A compression test should do that, any garage should be capable of this.
The test, done properly, will determine whether it's ringwear or valve guides, or both.

Doing this yourself will save a hell of a lot of money, being Aircooled it is very, very, easy to fit new pistons, rings and or a new head.

Hi Kev

Thanks for that. I have stripped and rebuilt old RD250 engines in a former life - but I now have two young kids and a job which constrains my time. I don't mind paying someone else the money to get it done.... Fancy a working holiday on the Isle of Wight??

Hence looking for a recommendation.....

Mike
