Hi Everybody
the center bush (above the fuel tank) on the gear shift rod has slipped out of place. gear shift is a bit sloppy and noisy.
question is can i just push it back along the shift rod into place or do i have to remove the shift rod then fit it in place.
if its the first it would be easier to fashion a tool to do the job rather than dropping the fuel tank
any advice very welcome
Cheers
Andy

Re: gear shift center bush
bush is clamped in place by a steel cap held in with 2 m8 bolts sounds like something is missing or you are talking about the plastic cover that goes over the assembly to keep crap out, they often break at the plastic lug that holds it in place
Re: gear shift center bush
bush in question is the LHS one holding the shaft as it goes through the plate with the hole above the fuel tank
Looking at the haynes manual its drawn as just a bush with nothing to hold it in (should mention its a 1982 Aircooled 2l 4 speed manual)
Thanks

Re: gear shift center bush
Hi
Nice solution, looking at it i could fit a bit of pipe without removing the tank. just split the pipe and slide it over the shift rod then slide it down till it fits into the support bracket
as is it still shifts into gear ok and i solved the scraping noise by covering it in grease
Thanks for that, i will let you know how i get on
