rear wheel bearing woes

Post by dubslug »

Hi. Help. Just replaced rear wheel bearings. Done all the shoes etc too. When we tighten the hub nut the whole drum seizes. Loosen hub nut and it's free again. Any ideas what I've done wrong or advice please

Did you put the spacer sleeve between the bearings?

Hi, yes we did that. Drum spins free till we tighten the hub nut then it's solid

outer bearing pressed in too far or not far enough so that the clamping force is on the rollers of the bearing perhaps, it's not the best design tbh, alright back in 1969 but they should have improved it really for our bus instead of just changing the design of the outer bearing

hi bought thehubs pre done with new bearings etc, we have done it up now, its catching on back plates and also we have bleed twice but still the brakes are spongy, we renewed some hoses so knew bleeding was always on the cards. i know cant get the rear drums to set up properly. we replaced shoe cylinder etc. the hand brake is now non existant. i have to pump pedal twice for decent brakes, its nice and firm first time u use ten drive and use again its all spongy unless double pressed, also going back wards seems to effect the brakes, making them worse

help pleae

Have a look at the "Wiki" for how to adjust the brakes.

If the brake fluid has been in there two years or more, it should all be pumped through at all four wheels until only new fluid comes through.

sorry for delay.... seems it wasnt fixed as i had hoped. we have followed how to guides etc, i believe we have set it up all okay but the near side rear drum is rubbing on back plate, will this sort itself over time?
as for the sponge brakes, we fitted new master cylinder and re bleed system, was better but still not right, spoke to guy down the road, was told to start pressing the brake and crack the flares on master cylinder to release trapped air from it, did that twice and pedal feels better.... so now just the rubbing to sort once its dry
