Crankcase ventilation 1.6td

Hello, great forum here, I've not long got my 89 vanagon on the road and here goes with my first question

Currently I have a hose from the top cam cover going to the inlet tract of the turbo which is what I believe to be the standard setup.

I have read, which may or may not be a bad thing, that some people have modified this to include another pipe from the cam cover to an adapter plate next to the vacuum pump for the brake servo.

This is in an attempt to further reduce excessive crankcase pressure.

My question is has anybody done this and would it be a worthwhile mod, I'm new to this vehicle and vw's in general so please be gentle

Yes I did mine,i haven't bought a cam cover mushroom that takes two hoses yet!
I got a Mate to cut a hole in the plate with a lathe.

Ahh cool, have you noticed any improvement ? I don't have much blowby but do have quite a bit of oil residue in the pipe to turbo inlet from the cam cover.
Did you notice any improvements ?
I have access to lathes, millers, welding tackle etc so I'll make a plate up.
Just rebuilding the turbo at the moment which is why I noticed oil but most of that is due to the turbo itself from general wear.

I can't say I have as I replaced the rings soon after,but it has to help the oil draining back from the cam cover ect.
How much oil are you using ?

Depends on how 'green' you are, take vent and instead of venting it into inlet tract , vent it to atmosphere with a hose pointing vertically down just inside the rear valance (or a catch tank if you're environmentally friendly )

Hi Elvis,ive done about 3000miles with the breather hose outlet resting on an engine mount..no oil!!! so it must work [a bit?].

Your engine must be in better condition than when I did it to one of mine, used to look like I had two exhaust pipes sometimes

Yeah well ive got a front mounted oil cooler and lots of gauges!!

Well, Im using around a litre every 400 miles !
Turbo is the main culprit which is why it's now off and being rebuilt.
Exhaust side of the turbo is lovely and dry, inlet is full of oil and lots of play in the shaft/bearing.
Exhaust turbine casing is also loose.
Funny thing is the turbo spooled up and gave boost no problem.
I've not long got the van on the road after buying it off a guy who left it on his drive for over a year with a cracked head, broken suspension, blocks of rust for brakes etc etc.
Just have to rebuild turbo, def going to do this mod too now that I know someone else has and then attempt a rebuild on the gearbox as the diff has a slight whine.

I read somewhere that this method was taken up by vw on 1.6td engines towards later years but not on the t25's.
