Headlight puzzle ! !

Post by darbydingbat »

I have got round head lights with an H4 bulb but with a round base on the bulb. Can you get a round headlight with the h4 bulb with the 3 prong base? My van is a 2ltr air cooled on a 1983 plate. Any help would be appreciated, thanks Paul.

Sounds like you have a pair of early lamps that originally would have had the old 'round' tungsten bulbs. Someone has upgraded them with 'hybrid' (H4 lamps with the old round base)
Obviously, what you ideally want is a pair of later H4 lamps (H4 stamped into the lens) these became standard fitment from about 84 onwards.

Sorry to leap into Darbydingbat ( love the name!) 's thread , but I have a similar van - a little earlier. Just wanted to check if the H4 bulbs fit into the earlier original lamps ? and are they a bit brighter?
Thank you :) Julia
E D I T - had a look on Brickwerks - looks like I would need new lamps for the H4 bulbs.

I had this problem last year and managed to buy some on ebay for 2.45 each see this listing LLB012 LUCAS HALOGEN BULB. I looked online and these were the best price I could find the the Halogen bulbs with the older fitting. Alternatively you can buy an adapter ring that would allow you to fit standard H4 bulbs, the main advantage to this is that replacement bulbs are easily sourced.
