Yes I looked at the diagram, my timing goes too high as soon as I put on the vacuum pipe.

My understanding is that if the mechanical advance doesn't work then the timing mark wont move when revving(assuming that the vacuum advance lead has been taken off and the vacuum advance nipple is bunged up).

I have revved it with the vacuum off and with the nipple blocked and the timing does still advance correctly. Would this rule out a faulty mechanical advance?

Thanks for the stats, I don't have a pump to check vacuum figures - will look at getting one. Any other ideas for the jump when I put the vacuum lead on?

I wonder if, you have the wrong dizzy or vac unit
Have a look on the dizzy there should be a number starting with 025?
Get a pic or two up also often helps us spot something

Also how do you know its 30 degs? Is your gun adjustable?

I'll get some pics tomorrow - good idea. I've got an auto, it has crossed my mind that I might have the wrong dizzy. I have a spade on the side thats not connected. I use a protractor for the degrees so the measurements might be a bit out but it definitely shoots up at least 20 when I attach the vacuum pipe.

I wonder if that's the case. Found this on ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-T25-T3-2-1 ... 0996739728 from last year albeit a 2.1 auto, the bottom number is similar but the top number is different. If there was a specific distributor for autos it's gonna be hard to find. Enjoy your trip

The dizzy in my van has been in since I bought the van a couple of years ago. By "found" on Ebay I meant "saw" I was looking for something to compare with the numbers on mine. I'll get some pictures later. cheers

The last digit on yours is probably a Q not a zero 025 905 205Q look at the table big herb posted and its there for late dg
Pic on ebay looks like a twin vac dizzy, does yours look the same ?
Somebody must know if an auto needs a different suffix dizzy and if it is twin vac

Twin vac has advance and retard
