Van feels sluggish after cam belt change...

Oil drip gone !

Drove van to work this morning, it feels sluggish after the cam belt change, it could just be me !

Is it possible it could feel this way ? Or if the belt has been put on incorrectly would it simply not work ? i.e. timing out ?

I already know the van is only a 1.6 non turbo diesel so its not going to win any races unless its against a pram...

And I already know I don't have any mechanical background hence why I ask the question !

Belt is most probably 1 tooth out - been there and done that! Failure to put the belt on tight on the righthand side is first point of call. (Assuming that nothing else was touched at the same time)

Could be a tooth out on the cam, or could be a tooth out on the pump - either will affect the way it runs.

have just been out for 45mins on the A1 goes to 60mph and that's it, (used satnav) I'm sure it used to get to about 66mph ish...

If there was a timing issue would it still be able to achieve 60mph ?

just want info before I spk with mechanic

It wouldn't, but the injection fuel pump would!

just spoke with the mechanic and first thing he said was fuel injector pump, he assures me belt is not a tooth out, will drop it back Thursday so he can adjust is it big job to adjust the pump ? Is this something he will expect me to pay for ?

Well if nothing else was altered and it was OK before the change it points to the belt being changed incorrectly making the pump out. Change your mechanic before he messes anything else up by Jimmy Saville-ing with the pump. We have already said pump by reason of the belt being out a tooth!

new belts x2 ? would that make a difference ?



its going back Friday morning, he said tooth is not out...

he was fine on the phone and said he'd retime it with light gun, he also said as new belt was fitted and old belt was at least 10 years old (not changed) it needs resetting.

I dont think he's out to do me and the fact that he's still an army mechanic 3 days a week I sort of think he knows what he's doing...I could be wrong

If the above sounds like bull then tell me cos I want to go armed with as much info as poss

Ive not had the petrol van since August 2013 so you must have been reading some really old posts !

A whole tooth out normally has much more effect than this, it just sound like the difference in pump timing between a slightly stretched belt against new.
Incidentally, when was the last time you had your tappet shim clearances checked? should be done every main service. Closed clearances do make a difference.

Martin
