1. Took it off and down know which way round it goes back. One end has something metallic in it(I'm too longsighted to see to see what it is).
2. It is very hard to suck or blow through-is this right
3. When i suck on the vacuum advance I can hear a very faint "pop" sound, is that right?

You mean the pipe i think
the choke pull down has a restrictor which ends up in the pipe, put that end back onto the pull down unit
the restrictor makes it hard to suck and damps the release a bit like your soft clising loo lid

Great - it was 50/50 and I fluked it. I have marked TDC on the pully, previous posts say set the timing gun to 5 degrees, my light doesnt have that option. Is there another way?

Not sure it would matter if it was the other way, restrictor is just a small hole i think
