Engine codes - AFN, AHU etc

Post by Winchweight »

Hi, dumb question, but when looking for a donor 1.9tdi, where do I need to look on the car to get the engine code as I'm looking for an AFN equipped Polo, Golf or similar to use as a runabout but then as a donor for next years engine swap?

Most sellers don't know where to look and neither do I.

Easiest place is cambelt cover, will be a white sticker..
Another way is to ask them the bhp. 90bhp is either 1Z or AHU, 110bhp will be AFN
Will be impossible to find a AFN in a golf (or polo) Passat or A4 is a easy option. But there is issues with using them from those models (different engine mounts and aux belt set up)
Ford galaxy's have the AFN with correct JX position engine mounts and will be the best donor if you really want a AFN.

other option is by a AHU golf, then when the time comes fit all the AFN stuff to it.

So in terms of mounting the engine etc, there's nothing between the AHU and AFN. Just the ancillaries?

As above, it's mainly ancillaries.
Pump
Turbo
Injectors
Ecu
Vacuum lines
Block and head are just about the same. Very minor differences, AFN has 7mm valves-AHU has 8mm
Bearings are sputter bearings in AFN- AHU have normal bearings (from what I have read)
But.. I think the latter AHU's are exactly the same. As if you go on vagcat or etka, it's lists the block and heads as the same part numbers
A fair amount of people who have AFN's in their vans have AHU blocks and heads. So no problem at all doing it.
