Hi guys. I usually use my van as a daily drive but it has been stood for the last 8 weeks as I cant drive it following a shoulder operation. I went out today to give it a start to keep things running but did not drive it. I was doing a few routine checks when I noticed the expansion tank coolant was nice and hot but the bottom hose under the water pump was cold. It was running for about 20 mins. Pointer was over the red light on temp gauge but light was not on. I went around the front and the radiator was stone cold. I loosened the bleed screw from the rad and a little bit of cold water trickled out. Both belts are tight and the pump spindle is rotating. I have had a couple of squeals coming from the back which I thought at the time it was the alternator belts slipping. I assume from this that my water pump is knackered? The engine is a AZZ 1.9td. If one of you guys could confirm this before I go and order one please!
Thanx
Trunkster
It would be quite normal for your engine to go right up to normal working temperature without circulating any hot water round the radiator circuit.
The fact that it ran for 20 mins without local boiling in the engine would indicate that the water pump is pumping round the bypass circuit OK. In fact when water pumps fail, they don't usually stop pumping, but often start dripping water from the little weep hole under the pump because the seal has gone. Either that or the bearings fail, and you can wobble the shaft around. It's not unknown for the impeller to come loose on the shaft, but I don't think it's the first thing to look at.
The squeaking belts are quite normal too. Probably just need adjusting.
I would recommend a drive of at least half an hour, and checking the pump for drips and shaft play before condemning the water pump.
WHS^^^
It's not a modern car, there's a lot of coolant in that engine and 20 mins ticking over won't overheat it
The cold pipe means the thermostat has not opened..because it doesn't need to
