mechanic advise needed****t25 worn cam shaft

brakes is brakes, bearings are bearings..standard stuff.
the only issues on a t25 is the flat four engine.and they were pretty quick to diagnose a "worn cam"
you shouldn't be paying for head scratching and fact finding

lastest update :

handbrake has seized.
will not be able to take drive vehicle without full payment first. (which i can understand as I should pay for the work that has been done).

Obviously they are not happy about me getting a second opinion! which I am entitled to get.

Feel like I am being bullied and to top it all of have come down with flu arrrrrh.

The thing is I have no problem with paying for the work or time its taken, its just I don't understand how if I drive my van to a garage with a sticky motor things can go so wrong that I am being told a new engine is best?

It doesn't make sense!
also this garage did a mot on the van 5 months ago and some other things like
new rear exhaust, silencer, tailpipe and fitting kit
new number plate rectify some wiring
replace breather pipe and this came to £485

uhmm. They didn't notice this when replacing the rear drums & shoes etc. They sound a class act. Pay up and get the van back before any other faults get "discovered".

as I can n't move it, is it worth me getting somebody to go to the garage and get a third party to look at it.

if so is there t25 expert any one out there in the sussex area ?

...I'd be shouting at them, loudly, given how they've just apparently rebuilt the back brakes.

So why do they expect you to pay in final now if they haven't done/finished the work?

If shoes/cylinders have been done handbrake cables would have been off to do this.

Did it work ok before it went in?

it was working fine apart from the starter motor sticking.

would they have adjusted the tappets as part of the service?

looks like he just got carried away after discovering the back brakes needed to be done and removed the cam followers which then meant that they would have be replaced as the rods had been broken in doing this?

thought he could see the camshaft through the rod holes that it was worn ? could he ?

then thought actually forget it, they should get a new engine!{ last them a lot a longer, and these vehicles are not like normal vehicles they"re like a member of the family.}

i'm traumatised. they have impounded the vehicle till I pay in full.
£752 service and the brakes +
£254 for check and adjust of tappets on o/s. no new tappets fitted but new rods and seals as i stopped the job half way, to see if i could get a second opinion.

Re tappets.
Did the chap know that VW fitted hydraulic lifters to this van?
Hydraulic lifters are on zero lash, If he adjusted them to 6Thou + then the rods would snap or bend
If he broke the rods why should you pay?
I don't get this at all..

Not really, they don't tend to need adjustment. They are not like the old solid lifters. Do they mainly do old Aircooled?

How can they break a push rod? These are pretty robust. If they actually broke one, they'd need to replace it, but why would you have to pay?

Highly unlikely. They do wear, but a little wear is not a problem, plus it was running okay. I actually tried this with my scrap engine last night, and even with a rag and a stick I could not clean them enough to be able to assess if the cam was worn. When I first looked it was tricky to even see the cam through the thick oily mess that covered them!

Why not have the sills welded and get a new gearbox too - you never can be too careful!! Plus if I were you I'd get the family home re-roofed now and the boiler replaced - you really can't be too careful!?!? Bit flippant, but you should replace things when they are proven to be broken, not just on the off chance they might.

I'm not surprised - what a crap experience for you. Whilst it is easy to fume and rant an threaten, I suspect that you will ultimately end up paying just to get the van back without toooo much further hassle. What a nasty thing to happen. I also have a horrible feeling that your engine may now be worse than it was (although I really hope not!)

You shouldn't be paying for the seized handbrake though, they did the brakes for you!!
