Trailing arm bushes

Hi

I have two rotten trailing arms, I have cut one off and have given both replacement arms and new bushes to a local garage I use to fit the bushes, I got a answer phone message saying that they could not fit them and had spent a couple of hours trying.
My problem is the van is being picked up on Thursday and is going in for a load of welding, are these bushes that hard to get in, l am starting to panic as the guy doing the welding is normally booked right up and I will notbe able to get the van off the drive without any wheels. I have not cut off the offside yet, but this is so poor it will not hold up to going on a trailer.

Any help or tips for the bushes would be welcome.

Difficult to unless you have the proper vw taper tool, basically 6" of scaffold pipe that is tapered inside so the bush and the flanges on it are compressed and go in square.

Without the tool its similar to 2am Sunday morning when you are trying to thumb it into a cheese grater. Not pretty and doesn't turn out that well

Got mine pressed in with a 50 ton press apparently the 12 ton press was not up to it.

I used an old soup can cut up the middle with two jubilee clips to compress the bush and plenty of lube . It was pretty easy

Got mine in with a length of high tensile threaded bar, big nuts, HD washers and a big socket. Even then it drove me bananas, took TWO of us over an hour and swore I'd never do another...

Getting them out is easier - burn them out.

Na don't burn them out .Drill the rubber with a ten mm drill and they will knock out .Way less mess

The mechanic took the arms to a friend of his they used a 50 ton press and after I showed him the replies from the forum he made up some shims and eventually got them in 5hrs later in all he spent nearly 8 hrs on them only charged me £50 and a few beers.

He said if any one brings in a type 25 that needs trailing arm bushes he is going to politely tell where the nearest VW garage is. One thought are Polly bushes easier to get in.
