Gearbox change
Hi folks, my gearbox has gone on my t25 so I am trying to replace it. I have a mk2 golf gti engine in there and the old gearbox was a ALD code from the original 1.7 deisel engine. My question is would a dk code fit the engine on the mounts or would I need to modify things to make it fit.
Cheers folks

Re: Gearbox change
I put a DK on the last GTi panel van I had...
you need...
nose mount from RJES or fabricate one
rear selector rod - cut and shut weld to your old rod
swap your input shaft over from diesel to petrol
swap bellhousing over..
not too bad a job but I've done 3 now so have a bit of experience!

Re: Gearbox change
I personally like them, I've never managed to blow one up!
the only slight niggle I had on my last one was that with oversize tyres, and country A roads and villages there was a spot around 32mph where 4th was too tall and 3rd was too short.. not a biggie thou. Would cruise at 70 on motorway doing 2700rpm and at 3000rpm held a nice speed without feeling like you were stressing the engine and no change downs on motorway hills.
Gear change can be a b*tch to set up but once it's done it's fine.
save yourself a load of hassle and order the kit from RJES - Richard is a top guy...
page: http://www.rjes.com/html/prices___ordering.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
search on the page for "T25’Short Gearbox’ Front Mount Kit £ 50.00"
he includes a sleeve to enable you to fit the rear gear rods and stuff.. does make life easier than fabbing stuff up...
oh, last point, when changing the input shaft on the gearbox, the splined collar of the DK (091) box includes the reverse gear - don't forget to use this and not the usual one from your old box or you won't have a reverse gear at all
(ask me how I know)

sorry to hijack but what size tyres did you run to get those rpm at 70?mrhutch wrote:I personally like them, I've never managed to blow one up!

I'm on the hunt for a box with good ratios for my upgraded diesel and can only dream of 2700 at 70 ATM

Re: Gearbox change
16" merc alloys with fairly balloony AT tyres... I don't do lowered vans or slim sidewalls!

The best way! Sounds like a DK could be a good box for me.

Re: Gearbox change
hello ,i have just fitted a DK box in my 81 , with a mk3 golf gti engine , its a bit noisy so its coming back out and having the bearings sorted , runs good on the motorway , had to cut the mounting off my old box and weld half of it to the DK mount , and use my old gear shift rod cut and welded to the front half of the original rod , changes gear really nice after a lot of adjustment , my old box which is a ABD petrol 4 speed unit is up for grabs , the ratios aren't too bad if anybody wants it

Do you know the rpm at 60 with your DK or ABD?
Also at the op, I can put up pictures of a diesel box, bell housing should you need
Cheers

Re: Gearbox change
SORRY
my bad, I got the rpms 1000K out...
call it brain fudge, typo, skim reading etc.. etc... but I DID mean to type 3700 rpm NOT 2700...
I reckoned over 4K then the GTi 8v started consuming fuel at an exponential rate, thus for sh*ts and giggles I swapped out the ABD for a DK..
