Propex inlet vent

Post by mbcamper »

Whilst cleaning up the side of my van I tried to remove the Propex heater inlet vent:

In an effort to get a replacement I've contacted both Propex (who said the part isn't theirs and Autosleeper would have supplied it), and Autosleeper (who didn't know and suggested I contacted Propex)...

I've googled for hours for an alternative looking a DIY and marine solutions, but I can't find anything suitable. Does anyone know where I can get one or am I just going to have to make something?

Thanks

Mark

Looks like you need a marine exhaust outlet for a Webasto/Eberspächer - what size pipe are you using (inside diameter)? You won't get one with a cover over though. An odd place to put one though - not very easy to seal!

It would make more sense to have through the floor, then there wouldn't be a ruined panel and you wouldn't need a box over it. Is it definitely the inlet?

Inlet for combustion is the same as the small pipe below at the sill but should be in a different location from exhaust so it does not draw exhaust in
inlet for hot air should draw from inside the van or you are heating cold air all the time, as said check where it leads, if its the hot air intake it could be dangerous if thats the exhaust below it.

Well, I think given the rust/rot it has already caused, I'd be loath to replicate it. Wouldn't make sense. Better by far to repair that panel properly and remount heater through floor or route inlet pipe or exhaust (whichever that is) through floor and set it so it faces opposite way to the other pipe underneath) which (a) will mean any moisture in the area can drain away and (b) not look unsightly.

Looks to me like a kwik-fit style job :D

I think it's an Autosleeper installation - I've seen them on other van pictures.

Anyway I do like the idea of having the inlet so it comes from under the van. I feel another little weld coming on to fill up the hole and I'll remove the heater "temporarily"...

Thanks

Just after some advice on how best to weld up the 45mm hole which is shown below before I cleaned it up:

I realise I need to be careful when welding in the middle of a big panel like this so I don't distort it. So would I end up with a good repair if a put a plate slightly bigger than the hole inside the van and weld around the hole (overlap weld)? I could then fill in the dip with body filler.

Or alternatively I could make a repair patch a fraction smaller and butt weld it which would be harder of course.

Or does it not really matter as long as I avoid getting it too hot?

Thanks

make a patch bigger, drill 4 holes through outer panel and puddle weld through to new one, minimal heat/distortion and use pod,it not like its structural nor is the patch bit on an exposed side like rear arch etc
