Hi all ,been a while since I visited the forum. My daughter has had my van this last year and it's just back with me for a month or two. It's a 1.9 dg petrol. Had a recon engine and recon pierburg carb fitted a couple of years ago.

Runs well with only one issue that I can't quite understand. Starts from cold and wet without issues , choke steps down ok and although the electric choke is broken the water heater bit sees the choke off as you would expect.

The issue which is quite intermittent but not usually instantaneous is that the van starts to stall every time you slow down for a junction. Starts ok after stalling but need to keep revs up. Any suggestions as to cause and fix?

Second smaller issue could someone describe how the dip stick carrier tube fixes onto the engine . I know there is a bracket fitted to the alternator with a small clip but can't see how the engine end fits.

It just pushes in through a rubber o ring in to a reasonably tight fitting hole!!! The bracket stops it from rattling or twisting out.

Stalling under braking could be a vacuum leak on the carb/dizzy/brake servo/inlet manifold.. any of those..

Thanks 123, just been out and retrieved the bit that was left in the tight fitting hole!! It has broken off what're the o ring fits, I now see how it works. Thanks a lot.

Ed, thanks I have seen the numerous posts about these issues and will have another go at tracing a leak. I have tried the spraying wd 40 etc. but to no avail. I will try again.


It was just the randomness of the fault which has me confused. Would air leaks not cause a consistent failure to idle properly?
