Pushrod Tubes for 1.9 DG

Post by sturtywurty »

Following an oil change I've found a leak that appears to be coming from one of my pushrod tubes I need to give the engine a good clean and see which exactly, but if I can get then cheap enough will do the 4 on that side) which coincidently aren't covered by the plate that resides on the otherwise AND have nice big dents in them.

I'm really looking for what are going to be best and easiest to fit. From the looks of it the telescopic ones are prety easy? rocker cover off, bits out, rods out, clean, pop back in and reassemble?
Does anyone have any advice, preference or links for which type to get and where's the best place?

I found this set whichseems to suit and be pretty darn cheap? Assuming they're the right ones.

Yes does look good value if you need 8?
need telescopic if you are not into removing the head, may be worth trying to rotate the leaky tube slightly first, i have read it can sometimes be just enough to stop a leak although maybe not a permanent solution, dents wont stop them doing their job and who lays under their van anyway

if its just one leaking or even 3 just do them with a part from a trusted supplier

Thanks for the advice. I'll try rotating them and see how I go. It's a pretty slow leak anyway and I can take it from there.

My DG engine has died leaving me with a spare telescopic push rod tube, if you would like it (FOC) let me know your address and I'll put it in the post.

Should mention mine isn't as fancy as that Brickwerks one, its a concertina type in stainless steel. Similar to this:

Thanks for clearing that up. I'll have to pass then I'm afraid. My plan was really to find the leak. Remove the rods etc and cut a section out the old one and remove it in situ and then just spring a telescopic one back in its place. I've still to try rotating them anyway.

Thanks again for the offer but I'm pretty novice and don't want to take too much off.

No problem, I was wondering how it fitted, can't remember how I came to have it. I imagined getting it into place and then opening out the concertina parts with a screwdriver or similar to make it longer. Glad I never got around to trying!

Taking a head off would cost you as much for the gasket kit as 3 telescopic push rod tubes, even if all 4 have gone nobody would bother with the effort and risk for the cost of the telescopic tubes
Personally id just go for them and not bother rotating unless you are on a budget :ok

In which case the tubes it is.

I've only had the van a few weeks but when in finding problems I'm pretty keen on putting new bits in as its something less to go wrong (hopefully) in the future.

Those ones I linked to tempt me because they're cheap for 8 with the gaskets and seals and I'd really just aim to do one side now and the other in its entirity when I get a leak there. Of course though I worry about the quality and they might be naff.

The leak isnt anything I'm worried about at the moment, it's verysmall and very slow, maybe a drip every 30 mins/hr or so. It's just annoying sticking a bucket underneath so it doesn't ruin the wife's drive that bothers me :-P

plenty of cheap and nasty parts out there
most of us who do our own work soon learn that you are better off getting quality parts and doing the job once

its often hard to know a quality part from a crappy one so if in doubt better to use a supplier who you know is trustworthy imo as my previous suggestion
its your money and your choice at the end of the day :ok

If you plan to use the telescopic ones make sure you get the scat 'big mouth' telescopic tubes for a DG, they have 3 sealing rings and one bigger end for the crankcase end. The ones on the link are the two seal ones with both ends small, these dont fit as I found out!!! But I hjave a set of big mouth ones and there are no leaks. use new silicon seals as the ones with the tubes are a bit naff.
