Another temperature gauge not working

Post by kcbart »

Hi,
I am a new owner with a temperature gauge doesn't move - it stays just out of sight on the left of the gauge!
The warning light blinks rapidly on startup and then goes out, which would appear to be normal.
I have read the wiki and searched the forum which lead me to check the following:-

1. The temperature sender is blue with 2 wires. I have checked that one is a good earth. I then connected both wires cutting out the sender from the circuit - this had no effect on the gauge.
2. I removed module 43 from the fuse board and put a jumper between the two slots as per the wiki - the gauge moved all the way to the right.

I deduce from this that the gauge is ok and the sender is probably ok (unless I have two problems) and I now have to check module 43 or the wiring from the sender to the fuse board. Can someone please enlighten me on how to check these.

Many thanks
Keith and Sue

Are you sure that you are looking at the correct sensor - I thought the coolant temp sensor had a single wire going to it (not two)?

Late van has a plastic thermostat housing so has a two pin connection, early van is metal so a single connection is possible

Thanks for the replies.
The blue sender was the only one I could see. It is on the thermostat housing at the back left of the engine looking from the rear and points towards the left side of the vehicle. I cannot remember the colour of the wire but I don't think it had any yellow so it looks like I may have the wrong one. I will look again tomorrow.
I don't know how to put a link to the wiki but the gauge test is under:-
7. Coolant and heating
7.1 Cooling system
Temperature gauge and sender malfunctions.

Thanks, you just copy and paste the adress from your browser top bar into the post...

https://club8090.co.uk/wiki/Co ... alfunction" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

ok thats linking pin 4 which is the yellow/red from the guage to ground on pin 6 it proves your guage and wire from fusebox to guage works
so its going to be sender, sender earth or yellow/red from sender to fusebox broken

have another look there are two positions in the plastic thermostat housing for a sensor and a switch, they can be swapped in positions

Had another look this afternoon and sure enough there's another sender at the back with a yellow wire going to it. It couldn't be in a much more inaccessible place!
When I took the plug out the yellow wire came away - it was totally corroded. I cleaned the wires and shorted them together and the gauge moved. I discarded the plug and used spade connectors to connect it all back up again and then went for a run. The temperature gauge now works as it should.
Many thanks for your help, it is much appreciated.
