I have had 215 / 80's fitted for about 5 years now

standard rims

van is worked as well, currently done 30000 miles with them on .

just done a trip to Germany 1500 miles in a couple of days

have pushed my van to 95mph also

never had a problem , and my trial tyres came of an old merc , they were cracked due to age , but never had an issue , still have them , just legal if any one wants to test

will not fit spare wheel carrier tho . I carry a standard spare ( my fronts are standard)

VW modified the carrier to take the 205 / 70 / 14 optional tyre ( dead giveaway to see if alloys were fitted from new )!

I have to say this forum is fantastic for hearing about people's real life experience with non-standard kit - I think a set of 215/80/14's might be a good stop gap before I upgrade my gearbox. I'll be swapping for a petrol box anyway, which is higher geared then the diesel box, but a 10% reduction in revs will still make a difference.

I reckon i'll carry a standard spare if that's all that will fit, along with a can of tyre weld and a footpump that I usually carry - if a punctured tyre can't be fixed with they tyre weld, maybe you could fit a standard tyre on the front and drive lopsided as an emergency "get you home" (or at least to the next garage) measure?

I saw on a T3 crash test video that the spare wheel in the front cradle is actually part of the crash protection, so it's worth carrying something around in there even if you can't use it. Worth a watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qO_AfCFQR2M" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Interesting that Rick. I wonder how having 58Ltrs of LPG in a tank where the spare normally goes would affect that crash test :?

Like Billy and some others, I carry a std steel with a std tyre as a spare, fine for a speed limited get me somewhere safe / useful solution. A tad better in fact than a space saver perhaps.
Got a new van, but it's a 165bhp T4 [shock horror] Accurate LPG Station map here

and I sneaked in a piccy of my other x4 wheeled interest too

Im over it now …...(until I get the baby moons and new rear bumper)

Why not try a set of pre loved 215's ? - mine were £20 per corner fitted and balanced.

No and to be fair I only drove a mile or so, I thought 205's would be more readily available than 215's as I only located 1 in my tour of the used tyre shops.
