Your opinions please, best 5 speed TDI box
I keep reading different threads about various engine gearbox installs, but what's the best 5 speed box for a1z 1.9tdi, what adapters are needed and what costs are involved.
Yes for a t25 before anyone asks!

Upside down passat box is going on on various forums,FB pages etc.....
Me?
Rebuilt 5speed with 4.14 R+P off 'the man' .
Had same fitted in my 1z and drove like a modern vw tdi with ratios etc.
Think R+P is 700 ish and rebuild is 600. Factor in postage and any odds and sods and 1500 should see it done with change.

What does R+P mean Elvis?
The flipped passat box option will involve mounting the engine in a slightly different place than you would with a T25 box, if i'm not mistaken? (I often am!)
My intention is to get an Aidan rebuilt/ re-geared T25 4-speed box for mine when funds allow - because I will have a spare 4-speed to use as the base, and I read that 4-speed boxes are stronger (I read it on a forum, so it MUST be true

R+P you've lost me too!!
I've got a DK which I'm just waiting on parts to rebuild, it just doesn't seem to be the best in 4th, and 1st isnt really a lot of use, although chatting with Aidan it is the best set up for the 4 speed.
I just want lower revs in top gear and a A4 or passat or renault would seem to give me that, and parts seem to be more readily available, and I could use a decent TDI clutch set up instead of this strange hybrid setup.
I'll get the DK in for now but want to line something up as I seem to wreck gearboxes annually!!!

Sorry chap,
ring and pinion!
Imagine the 5 gears as the cogs on the rear wheel on your bike.
The ring and pinion is like changing the front cog, numerically lower number is like putting a bigger cog on the front.
Gives higher cruising speed for same revolutions but takes more effort(torque) to get it going but a tdi will do it .

Dare I say.. finding a box witb the highest ratios in already wi be a challenge (tallest final drive from vw was 4.57 IIRC)And that box you find pro wil need a rebiuld before it has oodles more torque thrown at it by your tdi....
from what I have heard.. there isnt really an ideal std box.. hence why everyone says get Aidan to build it..

If it helps. I have a 4.14 in mine. I didn't mod the 5th gear though. Think mines an 8E box, which is .83 5th.
It's still under geared, but I didn't want a big gap between 4th and 5th like some have done. It's great through the gears, but still under geared once you get to 60 ish. Plan is to fit bigger tyres to gain 7-10%. Will improve gearing overall and is cheaper than a new 5th
