Post by Cyrus »

Went down to gsf to purchase a new 12v battery for my bus

And they didn't know which one, 5 came up on their system.
Does anyone know what one should be fitted or better still upgraded too?

I went into this a while back and seem to remember it was something like 72ah with a minimum 650 cold crank amps for a Diesel.
The second number is very important for a Diesel (650CCA) as this is what you'll need on cold morning starts.
Or higher....so treat the above specs as baseline and anything higher as a bonus.

I know that there aren't quite the restrictions in size on a Diesel as the battery tray/area does allow for a bigger battery than VW specified,
I understand type 096 are very popular and easily meet/exceed what it is needed...note* type 096 are general 190mm tall by around 278mm long which is fine for the rear engine bay battery tray but too tall for the battery boxes behind the drivers/passenger seat.

These are both very affordable options:

3 year warranty.

Bosch S5 100 in mine fits no issues 75ah 5 year warranty. Got mine from eurocarparts parts at least you can return to them in warranty period if any issues. Cost about £85 with whatever discount they had at that time.

These new Bosch batteries are designed for stop start engines so just keep delivering the amps even when partially discharged. Perfect for a diesel like the JX that needs to warm up plugs and then a good crank to get going.

Very good battery! but was it worth over 40% more?
Also..... check your charge rate....I suggest changing your regulator brush pack (for a 14.5 volt part) with anything less than 14 volts as these newer types require a higher charge voltage to achieve their optimum charged state.

It was the 5yr warranty that did it for me. If your buying a battery for less than £50 I would expect that it's life is not going to be that great. But you might get lucky. But it could also be a false economy if you have to replace it 3yrs down the line and the annoyance of having a flat battery as this never seems to happen at a good time!

No problems so far with charging from alty. I think mine puts out around 14 volts. But I often hook up and freshen up both main and leisure batteries maybe once a month from the on board charger.

Indeed....the BBB charger is a relatively crude device charging significantly higher than 14 volts...but in this case it isn't a bad thing to ensure 100% charge.
I wouldn't be leaving it on for too many days though.

My BBB was changed to a more modern Sterling 20a charger a few years ago so no worries about my batteries as they are being looked after when hooked up and given a four stage charging curve.

Had a little check on my charging rate as Martin suggested and I am only putting in 13.8v, from my alternator. So I have got a 14.5v regulator bought and on its way to me. Hopefully that will look after my batteries a bit better. I now have a Bosch S5 as my leisure battery too. Thanks for the advise from Martin on these new batteries needing a higher charge rate. When fitted I hope the new regulator will look after them a bit better.
