Still no luck with the poor running

Post by Watchman »

Hi Folks

I am at my wits end with the running problem I have with the transporter

No matter if the van is cold or hot I can not pull away with out reving the engine and slipping the clutch

When I first got the van I took it to a mechanic who changed the exhaust and fiddled with the engine tuning

He said the carb was worn out, and no matter what adjustment it would not improve

I decided to go down the re build carb route which I did and found a bent fast idle cocking arm

I have stripped the carb down twice in case I had'nt done the first re build properly

The engine revs really smoothly with out any load, I fact its never sounded better, but as soon \as I try to pull away I have to increase the engine revs and slip the clutch

Once the van is rolling it in the gears it doesn't like accelerating unless I move the pedal down slightly until it starts to get sluggish and then bring the pedal up it picks up again

|I have replaced the diss cap rotor arm plugs and leads

Is it possible that the rebuild and correcting of the arm has lead to the van running rough because it was set up when the carb was at its worse

If so what do I need to try and adjust or am I looking in the wrong place for the fault

Your help as always is greatly received

Hi

Must admit not checked the timing

The van is a 1.9 water cooled

Not sure if I can do the timing as I have never worked on timing before

I have a strobe light in the garage from my late dads tools, but never used one

I will have take to a mechanic next week, are you saying that the timing should be set to 5 deg BTDC?

Could be non operating vac advance unit..
poorly set timing
blocked jets..
Non functioning accelerator pump..

without seeing it.. cant tell if its been "adjusted" so much and parts missing by prev "specialists"

what part of the world are you in?

To check pump operation
remove the duct to the carb
hold the choke flap open
get someone to press the accelerator
you should see a healthy squirt of fuel from a small jet on the side.

no squirt then the pump diaphragm is split..or the jet is blocked
available from gower & lee

So the van went to the mechanics who said that the timing was spot on

He says the problem is carb related as the van ticks over a treat but got no pull away power

So this weekend for the third time I will strip the carb down again

Just a question, accelerator (i know I cant speel) diaphram I put in was a long stemed diaphram I have a short stem one left in the kit is it possible to make an error

IE will a long one fit where a short one should go, I am sure I would have matched the old one against the new but you never know!!!

OK
Is this a DG or a DF engine?
you have not said
Did the mechanic check the vacuum advance?
no power without misfire is a timing issue.

Does the second venturi (choke) butterfly open with vacuum?

did you do the accelerator pump check?
