Hi all,
Driving home from work today and suddenly realised that though the gear lever was in 4th position, the engine was freewheeling. Tried to change down to 3rd - crunch, growl. Pulled over and 1st and 2nd work fine, but it crunches when I try to put it in 3rd and 4th and 5th are simply not there.
New gearbox? Help! Just spent a huge amount on the body...

Cheers,
Tim

Re: Lost 3rd, 4th and 5th gears
need to check the linkage first and by disconnecting the cup and ball then try and operate the ball on it's own by hand, pull the ball fully out and that 4th 5th, push the ball in till pressure felt that's 2nd and 3rd, push the ball in fully against the spring and that 1st and reverse
if you can't get 4th and 5th normally that's a broken synchro hub

Thanks Aidan. So it's more likely to be the kind of issue you describe than, say, a clutch problem?

Sorry to butt in, but until Aidan gets back, I thought I would just say that if it works fine in 1st and 2nd, then the clutch won't be the fault.

Thanks! When stationary, I can put it in reverse, first and second, but not third, fourth or fifth,
Tim

Aidan will be back soon I am sure, but it sounds like (and for your sake I hope it is) a linkage problem then.

Re: Lost 3rd, 4th and 5th gears
so take the linkage out of the equation and see if you can select the various gears at the box, ie cup and ball disconnected (undo the 2 m8 bolts holding the rear bush plate to the box), if you still can't get 3rd 4th and 5th then it's likely to be a box issue
