New Facet Posi flow pump leaking fuel badly

Post by mgbman »

When my old mechanical fuel pump failed I got lots of advice from the Forum to fit a Facet Posi Flow 1.5 to 4 psi fuel pump.

I got all the parts, pump, filter. hoses. clips, tachometric relay and so on.

Fitted it today and guess what? The pump leaks fuel from the outlet brass union and no matter what I do it won't stop leaking.

The unions did not have any form of fibre washers and just screwed into the pump metal to metal. Inlet does not leak.

Why no washers? Is this right? Very disappointed, please help.

I have no experience with this pump, however, typically they use some sort of banjo union which normally has copper washers either side of the connector. Without a pictures I'm only guessing but if it does have this type or similar then it won't seal without washers.

Quick google shows plenty of images but no sign of sealing washers. The tech drawing says that the unions are 'dry seal' with no washers or seals so presumably they don't use them. Maybe someone has put a wrong union in the package instead of a facet specific one.

The unions are normally taper thread so don't need any washers. You may have been given a straight threaded union which will need some ptfe tape thread sealer.

Thank you bigherb, I will try some ptfe tape. Great pump though, fitted as in your pics, self primed even though the van on steep slope and the tank much lower than the pump.

The engine sounds so much better as it is obviously getting fuel now. We took the old mechanical pump apart and the diaphragm is thin and worn out.

Its a pity I wasted time and money on buying a repro OMEGA mechanical pump which turned out to be unusable and poor quality.

Should have gone for an electric pump in the first place.

Lesson learned.
