5 speed gear box replacement

Post by hacky »

Hi there
I'm new to this so please be gentle,

I have 1990 caravelle/camper LHD 1.6TD with a 5 speed gearbox probably past its best. It's in the garage now and I'm swithering as to having a gearbox rebuild (if possible). A costly £1300 reconditioned one is out of my price range. I've seen a 5 speed without a code but a "reconditioners" mark for £300, seller says it's in perfect working order and still running in the van. Do I take a chance? How important is it that I know the code? Any thoughts welcome. 8)

well as youve made a bit of an effort to introduce yourself  you really need the code , its on the underside there is a diagram someplace on here but i cant find it , others will be along, but if you get the wrong one then you could end up revving your nuts of and going no place

If the van can be driven (dealer selling box) and there are no obvious noises/whines/jumping out of gear/crunching between changes.... in all gears. Then it's a good bet...change the gear oil straight away.
Shame you couldn't pull the drain plug to check for any large bits but I doubt the seller would be that obliging...lol
