stainless steel silencer
just noticed a big hole in my silencer , sounds like an old fashioned bi-plane ! ive checked the system over and the rest of the pipes look to be in good condition so ive decided to buy a stainless steel silencer , had a look around and found this ,

Re: stainless steel silencer
Unless the rest of your system is already stainless you'll be chucking a lot of money at your vehicle to say the least. Once you're into the £300+ mark. you might as well look at a full system.
Thats where I am I suppose. I just fit £25 kawasaki boxes although undoubtedly I'll go fully stainless in the end. Mines an early setup too. Kawasaki one gives it a lot more grunt and it sounds great.
Its in the WIKI under 'custome exhausts'

Re: stainless steel silencer
Question, I looked at those 2 SS silencers linked to above. Question, do they fit onto the existing standard early style pipes ? I am guessing they do, but not 100% clear from the "blurb". I ask as I think our Tin-Top is going to need a new silencer soonish and my pipes are in good nick (for now).
"Our" other option is the VW Speedshop SS complete system like the one I have fitted to our Hi-Top (LINK HERE) which is ace, but I don't need a whole system for the Tin-Top, just a silencer, no point in throwing money about unnecessarily

Re: stainless steel silencer
Im ordering a vw heritage ss exhsust for mine at the end off the month. However I'm panicking as it looks as tho the header bolts are well rusted on mine and some look like they have already previously been drilled. Am I in for some real pain getting the old system of.
Dave.

Re: stainless steel silencer
VW Heritage put 'shop soiled' ones through ebay from time to time but no - you just have to keep looking really. You could try asking Heritage direct if they have any seconds though. They do a stainless header I notice, but thats prohibitively expensive in my view even if the work involved in making it probably justifies the retail price. It just makes little sense for that one part.

Re: stainless steel silencer
Dave Fritz had a type 4 header for sale on his stall at Dubfreeze, do a search for split van center for his number. Best to email him as he back and forth to the states often.

Re: stainless steel silencer
well so much for just bolting it on ! studs on the box and holes in the flange are out by about 2mm , gonna have to elongate the holes in the flange in the morning

Re: stainless steel silencer
done ! not too much of a chore , just elongated the holes a touch and on it went ! biggest faff is the nearside top as the pipes are in the way so it's from the top through the engine bay with a spanner
