Two discoveries, What are they.

Post by eiret25 »

Hi all. While messing around in the van, an ex German army van, I found two items that has me wondering.
One is a relay under the drivers seat. Any idea what it is for?

The second is a plug found behind the dash. My van was not fitted with a radio as it was built for the army but I wonder is this for a radio?? All wiring looms were the same maybe?? Thanks in advance for opinions.

First one looks like a split charge relay to charge a second 'leisure' battery........not sure about the plug.

The first is look like a split charge relay,
the second pic is not clear, but I think VW did not made lot of different dash looms especially in the last years, so I vote on the radio connector.
If radio then brown should be ground, red is constant power and the grey/blue is dash illumination.

Im just after thinking that I should have got a part number of the relay. I recall that it was stamped with VW and AU logos. My van came straight from the army so I am unaware if it had more than one battery. Every day is a learning day with these wagons :D

Heaters were common on army vans, especially on radio and service ones. It is better to connect the heater on a second battery. Do you have a heater?

Yes I have ZsZ, its a VW fitted DA6, however not properly functioning. Blower kicks in after turning it on after approx 1min. However the fuel pump I believe is faulty as I hear no clicking prior to the blower starting and no heat.

Then the leisure battery relay mistery is solved :ok

For the heater: fuel pump can stuck if not used for long time, as was on my D1L.

No it's probably the split charge relay. I have exactly the same type fitted in the same place.

As Titus said, the relay is for the second battery which is installed to power the heater.

mostly under the driver seat, but on diesels I've seen under the passenger seat
you dont have under the driver, so check the passenger

it is simple: if you have two batteries in your car - apart from the fact where they are - then one is a starter the other is the leisure :pimp

E D I T: driver/passenger side above is LHD

Here is a few more pictures. Wires go to the fuse board, to the relay and then under the van. No sign of where a spare battery would have been. Will take a better look when the weather allows.
