Wont start first time

Post by PeeSG »

Hi all

Got a 1983 1.9 wbx

Was a non runner, but got it running sweet. However if i havent started it for a week, it either wont start, or will take ages to start. I know fuel is getting to the carb, cos i can smell it. I have chaned fuel lines, spark plugs, rotor and dizzy, HT leads were new when i bought it, new exhaust pipe (back to stock from empi twin) had oil change and oil filter done etc. Only thing not changed is the coil and fuel pump. The fuel pump must be working as fuel gets there fine and i have had it running well before.

Could the coil be my obvious choice? Yesterday it wouldnt even start. Also should i check each plug is sparking? And can i tell if the coil works by testing it in any way?

this is a pic of the engine , the coil doesnt look like any i have seen before, could it be the wrong sort?

Any help would be great. I want it to start on first/second turn really.

Hi mate - in short...yes, you can test your lead for spark....its well documented - and I am not knowledgeable enough to spread the word

Just a thought...its not battery is it?? Enough to crank but not to start??

Have you tried that? Will it jump start from another vehicle?

Although Aircooled this thread https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=127184

and his others go through a load of starting issues...sure it mentions testing the leads in there somewhere! search by Author for Steve's other threads. He's probably insane by now after the issues he has had!! lol

Do you have home start.... :D

Thanks to em for the single response from the thousands of users on this forum.

Anyway thank you em and i have it running now, turns out it was a loose lead to dizzy.

You are a role model for all the silent ones out there.

Blinking 'eck, mate. Some of us work for a living, we don't man the 'hot line' like the Samaritans. Over the years I've started to give advice as I learn more and more about our van, but I can't thank the other 80-90 members enough for the time and advice they have given me.
Are we going on anything else?

PSG - glad you've got it sorted but I think most of us would have struggled to identify that fault over the forum.
1986 1.9 Petrol/LPG with Devon pop up.
