Sounds like its MISFIRING!!??

Post by arch »

Hi All

My 1.9 DG 1986 is running lovely on choke but soon as it warms up and the choke comes off it runs awful. it sounds as if its misfiring.
I've changed the plugs, leads, dizzy cap & rotor arm.The carb (Peirburg 2E3) Was reconditioned about 2 yrs ago and its run sound as a pound until the other day so i don't suspect it's warn yet!

Could it be that the peirburg carb has sucked some dirt up or an electrical prob?????????? :?

Any help gratefully received.

Cheers

Hi,

Sounds like an air leak - choke enriches mixture and masks the extra air coming in.

Check the vacuum lines, and also the brake servo hose for leaks.

cheers,

Hello again

Checked for leaks and found nothing!

Changed dizzy cap, rotor arm, plug's, lead's, cleaned and re-earthed everything. I changed the dizzy for another which i believe is sound. "SAME". So changed it back. She has a good spark and still fires on the button but run's like poo!

What next then?????????? Could it be a valve not seated right or maybe there is something wrong with the carb.
Just seems odd as it ran perfect 1 day and bad the next day so it seems that something has broken down overnight!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks again for any help.

Have you cleaned the carb out?
Did you check the pull down unit for leaks?

Alright Kev

Afraid to pull the carb apart as there are a million bits to it and I'm not that tech on it. Would i have to split it? If so I'll have to get a gasket set for it i suppose. :ok

...and here's me thinking you had checked for leaks :D

the choke pull down unit is often a culprit of an inlet leak.

Pull off the pipe on the carb to it and suck it, ...if you can keep on sucking then it's shagged.. and leaking air into the carb.
It has a little restricor in the pipe, so suck hard.
if it's not leaking then it's time to take the carb off and clean it out... inc the little fuel inlet gauze behind the inlet spigot

Cheers Kev.

Told you wasn't really tech on it. :?

I can't see that its much more than something broken down as she ran fine 1 day and like poo the following day!
I do love her but God I could slap her sometimes. :D

Cheers Kev. :ok

Right

Pulled the carb off to find the gasket soaked through! Started splitting the carb in half and there is a bolt missing!!! Pulled it apart and yep gasket soaked through!! 2 leaks "Surprise".

Cleaned all jets and little strainer. Time to get a gasket set and put it all back together and hopefully this is the end of my problem. I can't figure where the bolt is and if this is the problem that means it's worked it's way loose and fallen out but i cant figure it out...

When i come to re-fit the gaskets is it best to fit dry or with a little sealant and If so wot type?????????????

Kev............... sucked like a mad thing on the choke pull down unit and nearly passed out.. So thats fine CHEERS

RIGHT

Had another look at the peirburg. pulled the accelerator pump apart and found a small split in the poppet valve. Would this make a massive difference?? Like i said don't get a lot of time on this and think I'm missing thing's. So like i said I'm starting again and making a list otherwise I'm going to be here forever!!!!!!!!!!! Grrr

Any help gratefully received PLEASE.
