Brake back plate

Hello,

Do I need to remove the hub nut with a 46mm socket to remove the back plate?

The shoes are rattling and on closer inspection the metal spring retainer on the back plate has bent and the spring has popped off.

The retainer is now too weak to hold the force of the springs and they will keep 'popping off'.

It's a shame as the back plate is otherwise in good condition.

I hope that I've explained the issue so that people can understand.

yes you need to remove 46mm nut it will be rotten behind where the 4 bolts hold it on to hub carrier

BUGGER, looks like I will need to buy a 46mm socket then!
Any ideas of the cheapest place to get one from?

I have the socket and bar and one of these.Makes removing the nut a doddle.Your quite welcome to borrow them if you can get to macc.

Thanks for the kind offer Rob. It's very good of you, however maybe a bit far to travel.
I've seen that VW heritage do that tool for about 13 pounds. Does a 3/4 inch ratchet fit into the square under the 46mm hex?
If not, how does it work?

You smack it with a lump hammer.Well thats what i do anyway.Oh yeh,best get a length of scaffold pipe when you use the socket and bar.

That's huge and non of my sockets would fit that!

I think my bar is 3/4" it needs to be pretty hefty because you need two fat blokes standing on the tubing to re tighten the nut.

Just checked, mine's 3/4 drive with a 1.6m extension to make life easy.

Trying to undo them with without the extension takes a lot of jumping and plenty of swearing!

Just had a crazy thought!!!!!!
The back plate is in good condition, apart from the weakened lug that the spring attaches to.
Would it be possible for a decent welder to strengthen the lug with a little weld to stop it bending again?

don't waste your money it will be rotten where it bolts to the hub carrier buy new genuine back plates ffrom ebay .de loads cheaper than in the uk
