Largest battery
Evening all. I'd like to install the largest battery that will physically fit in the carrier. Does anyone have any recommendations as I'm not adverse to paying top dollar (after shopping around), what spec do I need to look for (max Ah???). And are Bosch likely to give me the best quality?
Thanks in advance, Mitch.

Re: Largest battery
Bosch is a major brand....but so are Varta, Exide, Lucas..I wouldn't get too hung up on Bosch as being better but I guess it depends on which in the model range you are choosing..
Bosch S4 or S5 have a longer warranty and are certainly built to a high standard but then you are paying a high price. Other makes also do there own Premium range. Personally I would be happy with any of the brands mentioned.
Here are two from Exide...Premium & standard.
Premium

Standard

Premium from Bosch

S4 4 year warranty
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bosch-S4-Car- ... 51b172f651" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
S3 Standard battery
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Type-096-100- ... 4616616d5a" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
There are also some top notch batteries from Varta (Silver Dynamic range) ....like you say, lots of choice.
However, just to put a spanner in the works, it might also be worth mentioning the change in modern battery chemistry, especially the PREMIUM calcium/calcium silver type, which ideally require a slightly higher (14.5 volts) for optimum 100% charge. Our old vans came with 14 volt regulators which may not fully charge these types.

Re: Largest battery
Put a volt meter across the battery terminals, start the old gal up and report back on the charging voltage.....personally I would say anything less than 14v and you will benefit from 14.5volt regulator upgrade.

Re: Largest battery
Getting 14.15v when it's running, thus, I'm sure the alternaor is ok (words that could come back and haunt me!!!). Quite like the idea of a shiny new battery.

Re: Largest battery
14.15volts is good
with these vans now reaching a minimum of 23 years old, very few are still running the original alternators or at least if they are they have had at least one rebuild and new regulator. Showing 14.15volts across the battery may already indicate a higher voltage unit is fitted given a small loss is likely through the aging and lengthy wiring.
