Carbs - Quick Dellorto Questions before Purchase!

Hello all,

With new engine coming along nicely I've started look at carbs, as the single Weber on it has a bent base, which is beyond repair.

Now the Weber is no longer available (some will say that this is no great loss I'm sure) there are limited replacement options. Been looking at the Dellorotos as they appear to be regarded as 'the best' across the wiki and forum.

Question for anyone who has fitted them - what do you do about a brake servo outlet, as the manifolds don't come with one. Is this simply drill and tap a hole of the right size in the side of the left manifold, or do you need to weld a boss on first (or even better is there somewhere I can buy one with the right sized pipe on already?!)

I assume that the oil breather gets routed through a catch tank?

Is there any other pitfalls / parts needed / bodges to be made?

Only asking now as I don't want to shell out £700+plus only to find that there are thousands of other bits I need!!

Hi,

I drilled and tapped a boss into my left manifold and have had no braking issues.

The bug pack is a mod I purchased from stateside for the oil breather (about £30-£40 I think )
I have added an electric fuel pump and regulator ( vw heritage website )some say dells like a certain pressure which the standard mechanical pump doesn't deliver, I didn't have a fuel starvation issue but added to aid cold starting as you will not have chokes for cold starts and the constant fuel from an electric pump has defo helped.

The only thing I haven't done yet but is widely commented on from other dell runners is to get it finely tuned on a rolling road.

I put a brand new mechanical pump on and had no issues with flow or pressure, much easier than the eleccy pump IMHO as some need regulators to stop flooding the dells.

I bossed both inlets (cos vw did!!) And was fine.

Def get it on a rolling road, you'll get the best set UP jet wise for performance and economy :ok

Hi All,

Buy the best cross linkage you can afford too! Getting them to open together and synchronised is half the problem,
You can have hours of fun just fiddling with them.

Oh and I just had the left hand mount bossed for the brakes and no issues, but mine isn't air cooled.

Thanks for all the replies.

I hadn't considered having valve cover breathers. How does the little empi/bugpack one work, as it seems to be three inlets (case and two covers) but no out?! What have I missed?

It has a metal gauze and then a foam piece inside....looks like it's just to stop oil mist going all over the engine bay...nothing very complicated!
1 connection from the crankcase breather then 1 from each rocker cover. Drilled mine last weekend, didn't take too long...he says...haven't had it running yet, hopefully test firing this weekend!

Hey Alex

I ran a piece of hose from the crankcase straight into the top of one of the carbs, avoiding having to buy any breather kits and I can pretend the carb sucking on the pipe helps somehow! I've got the low profile pancake air filters that are about an inch tall, and still have an inch between the top of them and the standard engine lid, so enough room to fit a 90' elbow.

In terms of other 'bodges', I have an auto so instead of an accelerator cable running to the throttle linkage I've got a solid bar, which I had to remove (nightmare) and bend into an 'S' shape (surprisingly easy) to avoid the right hand carb and also to leave the end of it terminating the right distance into the engine bay to connect to the linkage properly.

Defo get it on a Rolling Road - my van went from 24hp to 70-odd! (As well as new jets it got a new crank, pistons, oil pump etc. etc...)

Enjoy them mate, they sound amazing and the van feels half a ton lighter off the line!

Hadn't thought of that - seems a pretty logical route, it replicates the original set-up.

There is a rolling road round the corner from me - I'm sure I'll fit in well with the lowered and heavily tuned (?) corsa's that lurk outside!!

Will get the order in and then pop back with my many questions!

rolling road with someone that knows these carbs is a must.. fine tweaking and set up to give good performance and mpg..

Your old weber.. I'd be very interested in the carb as I am rebuilding a carb at mo.. could do with some extra jets etc. :ok .

Right, found rolling road in Manchester that specialises in air-cooled VW, has pics of a dellorto on home page! That seems better.

Toomanytoys - I'll send you a PM once I've got the dollortos on regarding the weber. Its is good nick other than the warped base, and has full rebuilt kit recently applied, so ideal for spares.

Whats the name of the garage in Manchester? Still not got mine done so sounds of interest. Maybe they'd do a deal for a joint session :wink:

Cheers Alex..thats super...

try and make sure you know what the jetting is on the carbs when its done.. record it somewhere for future use.. easier to read it off some paper than tk go into he carbs to find out whats in there..
