Radius arms
Hi all
1989 1.7d
Iv checked the wicki and can not find what I'm after
I had 2 new front tyres fitted the other day and whanted the tracking done
The guy got it set up and the readings were shocking
It was pointed out to me that the radius bushes needed reacing
Iv got them on order !!
My arms don't match what I can find online mine screw in to the lower arm
And are not held on with the two or three bolts as I can find
Is this correct
Now as the caster was so out they could not get a reading
The computer say's that there is a bolt both sides of the top ball joint
To make adjustments how ever on closer inspection
I can not find them
How is this adjustment done ??? With out theses bolts
Any help very welcome

Yes they screw in - there are flats that you can use a spanner on but I found it easier to use a large Stilson plumbers wrench and it was easy then!
The bolts are there! Just difficult to identify at first.

Re: Radius arms
late cast arms have radius rods that screw into the arms, don't try and remove them from the lower control arm imho, you are better off removing the whole lower control arm and radius rod assembly as the flats on the radius rods are very small and you may well not be able to undo them without rounding them off or be absolutely sure on reassembly that they are fully refitted and if you damage the rods surface with mole grips and the like you may put in a stress raiser that could cause subsequent failure - the NUTS either side of the washers sandwiching the rubbers that provide the caster adjustment are the same as the earlier three bolt type
Re: Radius arms
Ok thanks lads
Does any one have pics of the 2 adjustment bolts by the ball joint
Iv been under again this morning and can not find them for love or money
I can find the 2 that bolt the ball joint to the arm
That are horizontal mounted ??
Many thanks

Re: Radius arms
Ok guys now I'm confused
The guy told and showed me on the tracking machine that the top ball joint has a bolt both sides of it
That are going through the hub upright that allows ajustment from front to back
As you look at the hub with the wheel off
How ever I can not see them in person nor on the pic posted up here
So god knows

Re: Radius arms
Are you referring to the 'Camber' adjustment?
This is done via the long bolt that goes through the upper control arm, theres an eccentric washer that adjusts this.
Castor adjustment has already been explained by Aiden.

Re: Radius arms
Methinks his machine lies!
Get him to show you this bolt on the van that he would adjust.

Re: Radius arms
And tell him, the 80/90 crew are coming to watch in our deckchairs.
As we've said, adjustment is via the long bolt at the top. The only other adjustable things are the radius arms and track rod ends for toe.

Re: Radius arms
be prepaird!
the bushes can wear so bad they chew through the collar and the chassis!
age / type / condition of the van has no bearing on this!
sometomes its easier to drop the bottom arm with the tie rod in place
you may need new tie bars , bushes and collars and possibly some chassis welding .
ideally make sure all this is available so it can be sourced easily if the van is on the ramp dead!
you can change the outer and collar without removing the arm / rod as this only needs removing to do the rear bush
these are the bushes / collars as an idea
