Still dead
So tried putting another dizzy in and I still can't get her to turn over.
All things check ok. Fuel air spark but will try spark again tomorrow
If no spark what can it be if I have already tried a new dizzy
Coil is fine

Re: Still dead
Can't get it to turn over or does it turn over but not start
Not turning over is starter or wiring or battery
Not starting could be many things

Check the leads are on the right plugs.
2ltr Aircooled CU with twin Solex's & originally a 009 dizzie, but now back to standard.

Everything is working as it should ie carb fuel pump coil starter etc
Put new dizzy in but turns over but not firing

Re: Still dead
If it didnt work before you swapped the dizzy chances are thats not it
My guess is its one of the things you have checked and ruled out
Go back over them and check again
Fuel, take the pipe off the carb disconnect the dizzy so its safe and crank into a jar to be 100% sure you have fuel
Sparks, take them out lay them on the engine or metalwork connected crank and look for good sparks
Still no joy drop a table spoon of fuel down the carb and try cranking
If leads are on wrong you would probably get some poping and backfiring as fuel ignited at the wrong time

Re: Still dead
Hello,
So it turns over.. has petrol to the carb.. has 12 volts to the coil, but will not fire..is that it..
Are you using the original 'Hall effect' (2 pipes out of the advance/ retard canister on the distributor) ignition..
If so..check that you have put the earth lead and tag from the loom .. under the distributor locating bolt.. and that it is a good earth..
Otherwise check all the electrical connections.. these multi plugs are very fragile..
If all else fails.. you can fit a mechanical..or electronic..SVDA distributor..
Like I'm going to do on 'Ooops'
Here is a link:

and a little video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fOiSOObj ... gNrGfa9EAg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Cheap and simple..
If you like you can send it to me, and I will set it up for you on a CT engine..
along with numerous carbs

Re: Still dead
Hi again.
Not using the Hall effect any more. Using a condenser dizzy.
Replaced old electronic dizzy with a points one but still same problem. It was cheap and worth a try.
Check power on coil - good
Placed light tester on the neg coil terminal and checked that the points are opening and closing - check (whether the gap is right I don't know yet. I have nothing to measure it with and don't know what it should be)
Checked spark from all leads with an old spark plug against the engine. All sparking but not sure how to test if it is a good spark?
Checked earth on engine and van all good.
Current on battery is reading at the best 12.7v. It runs down to 12.3v after an hour or so of trying to get the engine going. I've had the van 3 years and sure the battery was in it for longer than that so new battery?
looked at fuel pump - yes fuel is running to the carb.
Ignition clicks OK when I take off the lead and click it against the carb fitting so I can hear it OK
Looked at carb. Fuel jet squirting fuel into from chamber of carb and fuel is going down.
Float chamber takes fuel then it goes down so no known blocked jets
Starter motor good as replaced last year as new
Fuel filter replaced
Air filter replaced
I have tried new leads and they spark
So what next to check?
The price it cost me to send you (sarran) those carbs I think RM can sod off.
Thanks
Steve

Re: Still dead
Hi,
So in summary you have a van with a spark and fuel, it goes round and round nice and quick, but it won't actually fire?
Does it cough and try and run, or does it just turn over and over on the starter?
As per Itchyfeets suggestion, take a small amount of petrol and stick down the carb throat then try and start. If it fires up briefly with this then there is a fuel issue even if all appears fine.
If it still just turns over then it seems there is an ignition issue. If you have a spark, then the spark must be at the wrong time, so check the firing order / dizzy / static timing etc etc.
If it still doesn't go when you are sure you have a spark and you pop some fuel down the carb throat then I'm stumped - suggests a more mechanical problem, but that seems a bit extreme. Was it running before this episode started?
Cheers,
Alex

Re: Still dead
I would set the points to the correct gap and make sure the timing is correct.

Re: Still dead
Tried the fuel trick but no joy not even a cough. I'm in agreement that it is timing or ignition related. Don't forget I had a electronic dizzy in before and same issue so don't think it is dizzy gap related. I'm getting a new battery to help any ways tomorrow as the old one has had it I think now. might help give a boost to cough up the fur balls that may be there.
What about compression?
Is it possible when she was working then it suddenly doesn't that it may be something a bit more serious within the engine to do this?
Pass I have no idea now
Help

Re: Still dead
You say you tested tested the spark with an old spark plug have you pulled out the ones in the engine and had a look
Dry them out and clean and gap them then test with those plugs not a spare
Old dizzy could have been shot and this one may not be set up right
If points gap isn't set you will get a weak spark coupled with dirty wet plugs may be the issue
I swapped a dg standard dizzy with a 009 for somebody recently and I noticed the relationship betwen the vac unit and no1 plug was different by as much as 90 degrees so how yave you checked your leads are right?

Re: Still dead
Hello,
Did you change the coil..
If you left the old one on.. that is a 4 Ohm transistor ignition coil.. and won't work with....
Points and condensor SVDA distributor..
you will need a 4 to (preferably) 6 Kilo Ohms points ignition coil..
Nice green Morris (Lucas) looks stylish..
or Bosch blue..

Hello,
So what is the coil 4 0hm or 4 K ohm
Photo will do..
