Re: snaped cam belt while parking
I wouldn't think it would take many revolutions to do the valves in, and even at idle it's still spinning pretty fast.. But it's really not the end of the world..
If it was me I'd take the head off and take a look. It's only 8 more hefty bolts than doing the cambelt. You need a big old bar and the right size hex head
Hopefully the pistons are ok, that would be the main worry. If they are then stick another head on - either a recon or a secondhand one. Or get yours rebuilt?
And this is a job you can probably do in the car park to boot!

Actually it's ten bolts thinking about it. Don't let that put you off!

pull the rocker cover ?
you should be able to check the valve gaps to see if any obvious damage?
thers always the possiblity its ok , but usually the 'trying to start it' does more damage than the initil stop!
i had a vehicle years ago that stopped with a snapped belt , the owner didnt know and they tried towing it with a landrover to start it !
result = snapped valves buried in the piston and head!

hi billy
yes i did try to restart it, 2/3 second burst & my old brain kicked in that i should look in the compartment. so hopefully new head should sort this. was trying to find out if the timing could be done in situ & how easy/ hard it is with my fat arms

Thats expensive for a refurb, you could get a remanufacture for that kind of money and probably have change too.

Re: snaped cam belt while parking
Hi, my jx belt napped at around 10mph. Removing the head revealed two valves bent and no piston damage. One exhaust valve £12 and one intake valve £10 plus head gasket £6. While I had the head in the shed I took the opportunity of repalcing all the vales stem oil seals £8 plus rocker gasket £6 and cam belt and tensioner £31. I consider myself very lucky. It appears it was wear in the tensioner that damaged the belt, I am tempted to change tensioners half way through the belts life !
I guess that at car park speeds your engines damage will be as light as mine.
