Aircooled gearbox guide pin

Post by pugvan »

hello all has any body got a guide pin its the metal rod that bolts to the Aircooled gearbox just infront of that thing with the two plastic balls on ( the thing that selects the gears ) the gear linkage slides on to it
I need to know the lenth of it from the big washer to the end of it ( not the end with the thred on )
at the mo mines got a bodged up bolt acting as the guide pin and i need the proper one cos my gears are crap and there's no way to fit the new guide pin bush i have for it so if any body has one they can mesure for me it would be a great help as this would give me a good starting point to make one unless any body has one they dont need ( in exchange of beer tokens :ok that would be even better.
cheers.

There's one on German Ebay at the moment, for a fair price.

Here is the link:

Looks like you'll need this crinkly washer too (as it doesn't seem to come with one):

Good luck,

*Correction*

Just spotted that you said you already had the guide pin bush.

Ignore that last link, then.

thanks for the link but there's smmething not right about that pin the bit on the end should have a grove in it that the plastick guide sits in the thing that looks like a crinkley washer that one in the link looks more like something glued on the end of it defo not the way vw made them but thanks anyway.

thanks mate but iam sorted now been under van today to work out what i need and iam going to make one
spent age's on google finding pictures of them problem seems to be vw made a "pooh" job of the pin in the first place
turns out it a metal pin with a lump of black plastic glued on the end that the wavy washer sits on you can still get the washer but i bet there's not many pins that have still got the plastic bit still stuck on the end in good nick so better starting from scratch me thinks.
but thanks for the offer mate.

there seems to be 2 types , presume the 'glued blob of rubber ' is the aftermarket / redesigned type

the serated washer in a groove is the original and the only type I have seen fitted that looks like its been there forever.

I have seen a lot of bent pins tho probably due to removing the engine and letting the box 'hang ' on the mounts and gear selector!

ye i recon your right about there being an aftermaket one its on german ebay for the best part of £ 40 ( stuff that ) but from what i can tell the original still has a plastic end with a groov for the washer to sit in (recon i can do better )
and yes your right about a lot of bent pins infact reading the forums some folk think there surpose to be bent
cheers.
