aux water pump jx
Hi all just went to van and battery dead flat put spare battery on and as soon as I do you can hear the electric aux water pump whirring, does this with no ignition on . Disconnected plug to pump and got van running. Is it OK to drive van with this disconnected as I'm supposed to be away this weekend.and anyone know why this is happening I'm guessing the temp sender switch is always on or a short circuit , anyone know the location of the sender . Any help appreciated
Re: aux water pump jx
OK update, connected wires up to pump and it sprang to life .disconnected socket from temp sensor on the large water flange and pump stops. Put paper clip across pins on loom that connect to sender and pump starts .... so I'm working on the basis that that sensor is fubarbed does that sound right ?? Anyway I think this aux pump should only activate if really hot engine so thinking it will wait until I return from weekend away ?? Any thoughts

Re: aux water pump jx
We have just had a similar problem with our van. Our auxiliary water pump had died sometime previously (which probably led to the demise of our head gasket but that's another story). When a replacement pump had been sourced (Brickwerks of course) and fitted we took our van out for a short spin and later found, when we came back to it a few hours later, that our battery was completely drained. Basically the temperature sensor for the pump had stuck in a closed position the first time it got up to 105ºC and stayed that way once the engine was shut off, running the pump continuously while the van was parked until the battery was completely dead.
The moral of the story, if you are changing your auxiliary water pump then you should budget to replace your temperature sensor at the same time. It's cheaper than a new battery.

Re: aux water pump jx
The purpose of the pump is to cool the engine if its been working hard and you turn the engine off. So keep the engine running for a few minutes if you stop at the top of a hill. Turn the heater blower on in the cab full blast for a few minutes (with the engine running) if it makes you feel better, that will remove some heat from the engine.

Re: aux water pump jx
Sorry for the thread jack, didn't want to start a new thread.
Can the aux water pump on the JX/AAZ be used to help fill the cooling system? I'm replacing the coolant in our Tristar and the diesels cooling system is a bit different from what I'm used to. Having trouble getting coolant in. System is completely drained. I got about a gallon in the pressure tank before over flowing, started truck in short intervals to pump coolant, no help. I'm now trying to get coolant into radiator through small hose.
It works, but slow!
Thought I might provide some current to the pump to help move fluid along, will that burn out the pump?

Re: aux water pump jx
Sounds like you have a blockage in the radiator or somewhere else if that is happening, when I do it the coolant just keeps pouring in with the final top up of a pint or two being done with the engine running. Are you sure that you completely drained the system to start with? Were you overheating before dropping the coolant?

Re: aux water pump jx
The engine was running warm, but not overheating. The vehicle is new to us, and I'm going over the maintenance items (oil change, filters, brake line flush, etc.) and wanted to change the coolant because we have no idea how old and it looks very dark.
I got a full five gallon bucket of coolant out of her. The coolant is quite dirty.
I'm putting fresh water and a bottle of system flush into it now, will run that for 15 minutes and drain, refill with distilled water and fresh coolant.
I'm familiar with wasserboxers and filling those, just new to diesels and there are extra bits in the system such as the aux pump and this bit here:
http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/1155284.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Not sure what that is, has an electrical connection on top.
With the trouble I'm having getting water in I thought maybe running the aux pump might help?
I should add that the vehicle came with a factory mounted Wabatso coolant heater. I have stripped that out, removed the two long hoses and capped the inlet and outlet connections into the system.

Thanks.

Re: aux water pump jx
i found it tricky to bleed when i first got my van and kept on getting air locks. i then found this easy step by step way of doing it
http://www.brick-yard.co.uk/forum/bleed ... 29710.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
follow it and it will fill easy.

5 Gallons US = just on 19 litres so with the coolant heater that will be about right.
That first bit looks to me as though it is plumbed into the heater circuit - most probably to do with the coolant heater. (Which I would keep if I were you considering where you live). My uncle used to live in Ontario and ice fished in the winter so I imagine any extra heating would be worth keeping.
You have got the heater control on the dash set to hot have you - if not the coolant won't get around that circuit so easily. You shouldn't need the extreme of filling via the radiator though! You could run the aux. pump for a while, after all, that's what it is designed to do, you should soon hear if there is no coolant there as the pump will race.
That filling guide above is worth following if you have trouble.

Re: aux water pump jx
Here are a couple more pic's of the unknown pump in the heat/coolant system.
In the first you can see the cap where one of the long hoses from the Wabatso attached.
http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/1162239.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
In the second you can see the direction of water flow (based on the one way valves) and the electrical
connection at top.
http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/1162240.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Anyone know if this is a stock pump in the diesel, or is it an extra pump that goes with the Wabatso coolant heater?
If it's part of the Wabatso heater setup I'm gonna strip it out. The rest of the Wabatso system had too many bad $$$ parts to make
it worth while saving.
