I started learning gas and was quite good at that but for body work I use MIG, You need to practice a bit but can get some good results. Use short bursts so as not to overheat and buckle the area. I often use 1/4 ot 1/2 inch of weld then leave a few inches and then gradually fill in the gaps giving each area time to cool. This stops the buckling. Always clean the area to be welded with a grinder or similar so the metal is bright and always cut all the rust out. set up and clamp repair sections and do a few tacks to make sure you have it on right before welding proper.
I use a draper 130 turbo with a euro torch and co2 gas shield. Weld out of the breeze as it can blow your shield gas away!! There are some great You tube tutorials on car body repairs. Seal the back of all welded seams with waterproof seam sealer and grind or flapwheel the welds flat before painting with a zinc primer to protect the surface until you have finished. Sometimes you will have slight imperfections that will require a smidge of filler to get the panel nice and flat, I am useless at this bit so after the welding I used a body shop for the flatting and painting!!!

Take a look on:

There's lots of info about different types of welders (not only mig) and choosing between them, as well as tutorials on different types of welding and various techniques. The forum is also a mine of information.

well i use gas for 75% of the work i do on these vans, its preferable for many reasons but each to your own, try use an argon mix as opposed to co2 as you will find it welds better cleaner etc, look through some of the threads on rebuilds etc to get an idea
