Sounds like a beetle ?

Post by Tec263 »

Hi, Merry xmas and new year to you all.
Firstly I apologise if I have posted this in the wrong place etc but I am new to the forum world and indeed to the Vw/T25 scene.
I am hoping someone maybe able to give me a steer ?
I have just bought a 1990 T25 with the 1600 TD ( jx ? ) engine. To be fair it seems to perform reasonably well however under power it sounds like what I remember beetles used to sound with that rasping/blowing/chugging type sound. I have replaced the oil and all filters, checked the exhaust for leaks but found nothing obvious. As I have nothing to compare it too and no one seems to know - is this normal ????
many thanks

Phil

Worth checking the exhaust manifold for leaks too.

If it goes ok then there wont be too much to worry about with a jx.....looked after they are a good little engine.
I had one in mine for 4 years and it never failed me.

Dont drive it too hard, keep an eye on the temp gauge, change the oil frequently.....and take in the scenery on the long climbs.
Good on diesel too....

Check the manifold points - ie where it bolts to engine (front and back). Even the tiniest gap there will produce that sound.

I am sure that at least one the manifold gasket is burned out. Check the one near the turbo.

Hi Guys, Sorry for delay in replying. Turned out it was the gasket close to the turbo. Nice and quite now, but surprisingly no change to performance.
thanks again
