Subaru Engine and gb installation problem

Post by skiron »

Right have bolted up my engine and gearbox together using rjes bellhousing and engine frame. I have a rather large problem. The gearbox is 50mm short of fitting on to its mount with the engine sitting in its mounts . If undo engine at its mounts and slide it back i am now out on the front mount and alot closer to the bulkhead hindering the air intake.

The engine slid in to bellhousing and is fully engaged with the the input shaft. Everything is fine. Please can some one help with this i am stuck at the moment :run

I have checked the gear box mount as this was replaced and was the gearbox as that was a pile of scrap from previous owner. Is there another plate that goes on back of box. Looking at the limited black and white photos of the haynes manual and bentley i would say no.

4 speed box? Was the van originally a five speed bus?

No the van was always a four speed. It had been messed about with by its previous owners and i have put the gear box back in from an Aircooled van. As the engine sits on the engine frame i can only think its some thing a miss at the gearbox mount

Aircooled gearbox fits further forward in the shell than the wbx so if your RJES engine mount is for a wbx then that accounts for the gap

Right how is the problem then fixed on vans running an air cooled gearbox's ? There does not seem to be any difference s identified whe ordered the parts from rjes? Its a two wheel drive engine mount frame and the bell housing s are ALL the same. When the engine is sitting on the mounts it looks right and gives sufficient clearance off the bulkhead .

Yes i have got a cooling system from a 85 donor van. The cooling hoses that run on the bottom of the van i had made by a hose specialist in uk. The coolant side has been the easy bit.
