Stalling at Junctions roundabouts etc

Post by skytie »

I wonder if any one can help as I'm an absolute idiot when it comes to engine tech etc. Recently had new cylinder head on dg 1.9 petrol engine, after snapped valve, garage said compression was compromised but not to any great extent. Any way engine starts well and sounds ok but stalls at junctions etc unless I keep revs up, just loses power on slowing and fails to idle ,starts ok straight afterwards. I've inspected for hose leaks but all seem ok on first look. HAVE NOTICED EXHAUST LEAK FROM ? MANIFOLD BUT NOT SURE,
Q1 could exhaust leak cause this sort of problem?
Q2 if not exhaust would simply increasing idle speed be a fix or temporary fix for this?
Q3 Does any one know of any good mechanics/garges for this problem in North East or in Oxfordshire

Any advice would be apreciated

Thanks

It could be a simple problem. Has the garage disconnected the wire connection to the auto choke on the side of the carburettor? If it's not connected to the choke it doesn't heat up and switch the choke off when the engine has warmed up. That would cause stalling when you stop.

Thanks Ralf85 Ill have a look in day light and see if I can ID this part,I did notice a free terminal coming from carb area, would this cause to rich a mix,cos seems to be running fine until revs drop on gear change etc by the way where does this connection you mentioned run to and from?

Yes it would cause the mixture to be too rich and cause a warm engine to stall when you slow down. The connector to the auto choke should be very close by to the terminal. Check it out. Let us know how you get on.

Check the small plastic pipes and hoses to/from the crab and dizzy vacuum advance/retard system.

Mine did this is was a vacuum leak at the bottom of the carb to the manifold.

Start it up and spray a can of lynx/ aerosol round the carb and other air vacuum
Pipes and see if the engine note changes. This will indicate an air leak
You can say alot of of things with "ar"

Well, checked all hoses ,all ok, started engine and sprayed all hoses and carb seals etc no problems noticed, got past fast idle phase and started with ropey idle again as usual, all electrical connections checked and seem ok. Found idle speed screw on weber carb, tried adjusting, took 4 turns to effect idle speed, but now ticking over fine, not sure wether this is a temporary fix or not but just took it out for a 10 mile run and didnt stall once, next step I think to a specialist for timing/tuning.
:D Thanks Ralf 85 , armyphil and ian hulley for the tips

Just a thought for future. The webber card on a dg never runs as smotthly as the orig pierberg cab well set up. They are not that costly s/h and someone usually has a good spare. Lots of info on here to set it up etc. Might just make any future issues easier to identify and rectify. I hope it keeps running well for you over the hols. [SMILING FACE WITH OPEN MOUTH]
