Engine specialist Cheshire?

Post by terrygibson »

Hi there

Anyone know a good engine specialist in Cheshire?

Our T25 Westy Atlantic 1.6TD JX goes like a train - been all over Europe. BUT starting from cold is very rough and smokey. After two minutes driving all cleared and runs fine. Uses about a litre of oil in about 3000 miles. Local garage has tried various things including setting the timings, reconditioning the injectors, Turbo was replaced as obviously worn. Head was replaced two years ago after blowing the gasket. I don't have the time or a warm garage to tackle it myself but want to pay money to someone who really knows this unit and can solve the problem. Any suggestions gratefully received.

Grateful thanks

Terry

When were the glow plugs last replaced? Are you using the cold start lever, does it make any difference? What about valve clearances, when were they checked last?

Hi Jim

a very tardy reply as I've been travelling overseas. Gloplugs have been checked and all working. Cold start is a bit of an issue as the injection pump was rebuilt/replaced and now doesn't have a cold start to connect to the lever. That said in various discussions people have said that it's not needed unless way sub-zero. Head was replaced 2 years ago but valve clearances not checked since.

Local garage is generally good but doesn't seem able to address this issue. May be as simple as bores knackered or oil control rings worn so that it's burning oil when cold (I believe the block was replaced by VAG about 80,000 miles ago)

My feeling is I need someone who specialises in these things to check all possibilities and identify what needs doing, whether settings, parts or block?

Best wishes
