Yes, i thought that after installing one and finding out the same!

I now have a system setup that turns the heater on for an hour when i phone the mobile under my bed. Basically it uses a light triggered relay. The light is the provided by the screen of my old nokia - which turns on when i phone it. I looked long and hard at the eber circuit diagrams and worked out how to operate the heater via a relay.

Its based on something (but not the same) as this:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12V-Stable-Li ... 4612ce0227

I can get the exact brand of mine later when i go out to the van if it helps...

i've been thinking about this for a while, and have considered getting the eberspacher TP4 remote control. But for a factory unit, i don't really like the look of it (like a little radio). Also i have limited space under the rear seat to store a box with phone and pcb in it, and knowing me i'll never remember to charge the bloomin phone!
The few things i'd like my eber to do is;
1, remote start
2, manual overide from the driver seat
3, thermostat (inside D1LCC) to still function with both the above
4, clock/timer fitted and working
What i plan to do;
at the moment i just have this rheostat fitted
Image
this works well, has a positive off and works in conjunction with the thermistor in the heater. But you have to physically turn it on and set the right temperature each time you want it on.
So, im going to get a mini timer like this
Image
This will work in conjunction with the rheostat, meaning the rheostat can be left set at a certain temp as it will only 'work' when the timer is in a on period.
Next i will fit a 3 way switch up by the steering wheel, maybe like this
Image
Then run 3 wires up to the switch from the timer at the back. Then splice in to the thin red wire in the loom that goes to the timer and connect it to the middle position on the switch. Cut the yellow (which is the power on wire) connect one end (timer) of the yellow wire to one of the outer connectors on the 3 way switch, and the other cut end of yellow wire (to heater) to the 3rd connector on 3 way switch. This should mean with the switch in say position one, the heater will work with the timer and rheotat.
And if your about to go for a drive and the van interior is cold, flick the switch to position 2 and the heater will fire up.
If i then want to fit some sort of remote control to the heater, i would fit and connect it under the dash to position 2 on the 3 way switch, which will then liven up the heater. Having that side of the controls under the dash should make it quite easy to put in a nice red led on the dash to confirm the remote has turned it on.
Hopefully that will give me what i want, won't be able to try any of it until next year as my van is away getting beauty treatments and a heart transplant
Hope that makes sense, if it sounds like it won't work, do say..

You will notice the phone charger in my box of tricks lollydy :). I always forget to make a call from the phone every now and then - resulting in a new SIM card due to inactivity.

I didn't fit that lovely looking timer on my eber because I couldn't work out how to get the eber to switch on for more than two hours (or similar, there was no option for continuos). I sold it on.

My controller (the new style rotary one with on/off buttons) has a remote operation line (that is used for the official eber remote control) that needs to be on ground (remote is off and gives control to the rotary) or 12v (remote is on, rotary has no control).
This is annoying because when the remote is on, I can't switch the heater off from the rotary.

Note this is different to oldie but goodies method for his controller. His switches on from a 12v pulse (which is better because it would then work from either switch). So at some stage, eber changed things.

What is nice about mine though, is when the remote switches the heater on, the rotary dial led turns on indicating the heater is on.

So I feel your pain but using my controller I can't work out a solution. I suspect you will have the same issues. I would investigate OBGs controller method if your that bothered.

I had to work this out from the eber schematics showing the remote fitted and comparing it to the remote "not fitted" schematic.

Good luck,

Hi ringo, any chance of a link to your timer? The one I pictured above also has a line out for the eber remote, from the drawings I found I couldn't really work out what it did (feed or supply). So, are you saying giving that connection 12v starts the heater? If so, I can work with that. The eber drawings are not very user friendly...
E D I T..
From what I have read about the timer I pictured, to get it to work for longer periods.. First press the heat button to turn it on, then keep on pressing it makes it come on for longer periods upto 8 hours I think?.. To be honest though all the eber clocks look a bit rubbish with no real timings ect. Be interesting to see what one your using.
I'm also hoping due to me having a separate rheostat that is linked to the thermistor in the heater that when the heater is turned on manually or by remote on the yellow wire, it will still look at the rheostat and modulate down.
I just wish they laid out their wiring schematics a bit better! I suppose one day it will click and I'll get it...

I've got an Ex BT D2 that came with a 7 day timer.

I've wired in a switch to let me put it on continuous. The timer lets me set the heater to come on 3 times a day for 1 hour and i can set these to come on any day of the week.

What timer do you have Tom, your picture has disappeared from the start of the thread?

That was quite a while ago. It was very similar to this one Image

My idea of a 7 day timer would like one I have on my central heating system. One that can be programmed to come on twice a day at different times for the next 7 days.

I'm now on a different van with a different heater.
