Stereo fuse

Post by rob1927 »

Hello all could anyone advise on the following?

I'm about to install my new stereo, it's quite a good brand and has a 10amp fuse already built into the back of it, the question is do i need to fit an inline fuse?

There is no mention of this in the users manual nor is it shown in the circuit diagram, the circuit diagram shows the head unit connected to +live and doesn't show any extra fuses at all. However on speaking to a mechanic he said it would be better to fit an inline fuse, what do you think?

It will be connected to either the main battery or a live feed behind the dashboard as i don't have a leisure battery yet.

If i do need an extra inline fuse what size should i go for?

Many thanks,

Rob. :D

Hi Rob,any fuse that you fit will be to protect the wire that you run to the stereo,
Isn't there a fuse dedicated (on the fuse board) to the stereo,I'll have a look at my Bentley.

Looks like fuse 3,10 or maybe 15 amp, have a look on the fuse cover.
I dont think, so I'm not[do I exist?]

Sounds like you're trying to do all the wiring from scratch - why not use the wiring that VW provided?

And, yes, as Dave says - always fuse as near to the battery as possible. If you rely on the headunit fuse, you have all those connections and potential chafe points unfused.

Thanks for your advice, i'll be on the van tomorrow, i will look into running a wire from the cab fuse box if there isn't something already in situ, theres a dedicated spare terminal for a blade fuse, perhaps i'll take a feed from there as another option. :D
