So.
my rebuild engine has been in and running for around 3 weeks. today I took her our for a last run before the oil change.
got back and.. oil dripping for the rear of the engine. Noooooo.. :cry: :cry: . I think its the oil pump.. the face plate.. if that make sense..
So on a CU engine.. if I drop the exhaust. take off some tin.. can I get the fan housing off and get to the oil pump.. or an I dreaming? is it back to the hire shop for an engine hoist..
so depressed I think I'll have to watch some X factor.. just to remind me there are far worse things in life that spending a weekend freezing by bits of under a 32 year old van. :lol: :lol:
On the bright side at least my welding is so bad (think popcorn instead of frying bacon) I can pass the bodywork onto someone else. even if it will cost. :run
Ultimately, are we not all air cooled?

you don't need to drop the exhaust of, just lower the engine down on a good sized trolley jack enough so you can gain access to the engine under the rear valance, the engine is still connected to gearbox but with gear linkage removed , then remove the rear tin plates you will need to remove rear fan and alloy cooling shroud also, I am shure you need to remove engine support cradle the alloy one from engine block to give you access to oil pump , are you shure its the pump it could also be the oil cooler seals this is loads easier to do as you don't need to remove engine bar and cradle

Thank for the instructions.
Not total sure it's the pump but it does look that way. its the "newer" square design the drip is right from the pump. would the drip be near / from the filter area if it were the cooler seals?. Suppose I'll only know for sure when I've got the fan housing off.
she's going for some sills, seams and paint work in the new year. hopefully by the time she comes back the weather will have turned ...

never fitted the newer square type pump so it may be that , I always fit uprated melling pumps to type 4 engines with the steel cover plate they are notorious for leaks but never had any on the ones I have fitted

can you send me a link please. I just assumed mine was a newer VW pump as it doesn't look like the one in the book. but it does have a steal cover plate and looks remarkably like the ones on mellings web site :?:
