JX head repair or not

Post by hedgejumper »

Hi , my 1.6td has snapped its cam belt, taking head off tomorrow to assess damage. i have a chance of a Golf 1.9tdi engine. My question is : should i sort out the valve/head damage and stay with the JX or buy and fit the 1.9 Golf engine. Before my VW i had an iveco motorhome that was happy rumbling around at 55mph all day so speed is not a big factor for me. I am just trying to gauge the amount of work involved in the two options especially as I have to work in the open away from the house and shelter. i have a third option of fixing the jx , buying the 1.9tdi and rebuilding it over the winter in my shed and fitting it in the spring.
I realise I am probably trying to get others to make my mind up for me but would be grateful to hear of any cons I have not considered.

im hopeless with mechanical stuff....but I do know that the going rate for a workshop to convert a jx into a tdi is around the 3k figure....that to some extent indicates roughly how much work is involved.

moving to a TDi has big advantages now and in the future but its a fair old undertaking....especially lying in the damp & cold over winter.

Thanks Keith, you have reinforced what I felt was the best course of action. I will do whats required to get the jx running and rebuild the tdi over winter in my shed.
Another good reson to look forward to spring.
