Non VW - LED Downlighters
Right folks, I know that there are several elektrickery specialist on here.
I have a room that will become my office / home cinema.
It's 5m x 2,75m with one small window so it is naturally quite dark.
The ceiling height is 2,3m.
At the moment it is bare so I have free range.
It will not have a high usage and will not need to be brightly lit like a kitchen.
It will have a drop down screen at one end and a beamer.
At the other end will be the desk with pooter on it.
I need some low profile wide beam lights and would like to use LEDs.
Is it doable and how many would I need?

Hi Titus
I maybe able to assist here.
I am an Electrical Engineer working in Building Services (mainly for high rise commercial building, offices Banks etc), and work for a large Consulting Eng practice in London.
I have lighting programmes that will tell you your requirements which I can use for you.
However you will need to tell me a couple of things please, what wattage LED lights are you proposing to install, as this will determine quantities and light levels etc.
As a general the lighting provided say in a corridor/ wc would be 150 lux and in a commercail office area 400-500 lux with various other levels dependent on the space task.
For a domestic space as you state, I would suggest that 250'ish lux would be more than sufficent, would you be providing a desk light for the desk
as this will assist with the No of lights required in the space?
We will also need the reflectance values of the space, if you can let me know the colours please I can work out the values too input. Please make sure that you tell me if you have any really dark areas i.e. black for the carpet/ walls etc as this will affect the lighting significantly.
It is quite straight forward and I can base the light output on similare light fittings that we specify.
I have done a quick calc based on 11 watt LED 's and the space would need 6 fittings and the illumination comes up at 218 lux- based on the fittings in a range I have utilised.
You could obviously put in more and dim up/ down to suit your requirements.
Anyhow let me know the info and I am happy to assist
Regards
LLoyd

Re: Non VW - LED Downlighters
Lloyd,
Thank you very much for the comprehensive response.
Below are my answers to your questions.
I do not know what wattage, I have no experience with LEDs
Yes a desk light and maybe some reading lights will be in the room.
250 sounds good, I want the room to be well lit with the lamps all on or all at full brightnes (may include dimmers) so that you can read normal text. Obviously if I am watching an internet stream I want to be able to adjust the levels to suit.
At present the room is gutted and the only thing that is certain is that the ceiling and coving (100-150mm deep) will be bright white.
I am not sure which way I am going to go - there's two routes - one is a bright modern look, the other a library reading room type of feel (preferable) with soft reds/greens and oak wood. The floor will be natural oak coloured laminat.
It has been suggested to me that I should look at a combination of LED down lighters and coving lighting (using LED strips) and even multi-coloured LED coving lighting.
When it comes to this room - the World, as they say, is a bi-valve mollusc.
Cheers

Re: Non VW - LED Downlighters
Hi Titus
May I suggest that you attempt to have a look at a No of LED light fittings, and choose a LED that you may like.
When you have done this have a look at the wattage of the light fitting.
This is essential to do as otherwise it will be impossible to quantify the No of light fittings that you will require.
I.E. If you want say 11-15 watt it is possible that 4-6 may suffice, if you put in very small output ones you will require a great many more.
If you send me your contact details I maybe able to send you some details of light fittings and links for you to have a look at.
If you are in Germany, light fitting manufacturers I can think of, "off the top of my head" are Wila, Zumtobel Trilux these all manufacture LED downlights
Anyway happy to assist a fellow member, I can easily input the info into the software.

Re: Non VW - LED Downlighters
I've found these on the bay of fleas -

They are 12w in warm white and some specs:
Eingangsspannung: AC 85V-265V Input voltage
Material: Aluminum alloy
Stromleistung: 12W Power
Farbe: Warmweiss Colour
Farbtemperatur: 2800K-3200K Colour Temperature
Lumen: 650 lumens
Abstrahlwinkel: 120° Beam width
Body Temperatur: <60°C Body temperature
LED Arbeitstemperatur: <65°C Working Temperature
Lebensdauer: ca. 50,000h Expected life
Zertifikation: CE & RoHS Certified
Do you think that 6 will be enough?

Re: Non VW - LED Downlighters
Hi Titus
I will get back to you with some info ref the lights you have chosen. I will base them on similar fittings as we will have info on software for the fittings that we mainly use which will be commercial type well known manufacturer, but should give you a good idea.
I am in and out of the office tomorrow and Friday but will attempt to get you confirmation for the weekend.

Re: Non VW - LED Downlighters
Hi Titus
I have re-run the program, and 6 No fittings will be sufficient for your needs. I would suggest 2 lines of 3 longtitudonally in the room. I have used 70% ceiling 50% walls and 20% floor reflectances which based on the info you have sent I assume will be fine.
Your fittings are not as efficient as the ones we use, which are in our on- line catalgue as I am not sure of your manufactuirer. However the lumens for each of my fittings are 737 lumens output against your 650 lumens output,I have taken into account this and reduced the overall level by 13%.
The average lumen level for the space level should be appox 220 Lux which is fine.
I know you have a desk lamp for close desk work as well.
I have looked at 9 fittings but this gives too much light output approx 400 lux , this would be OK if you wanted to dim up/ down but you would obviously need a dimmer and the fittings would need to be compatable to do this as well.
Let us know how you get on, you should be fine with these based on the info you have sent, although obviously I have assumed a couple of bits ref the efficincy etc.
Hope this assists.
LLoyd
Regards
PS I am happy to give you my e-mail so you can let me know how it looks etc , but let me know if I should put in the members bit as do not really want to on the open forum.

Hi Titus
Not sure how I give you the e-mail address do I just do in the members section or is there a way I can do direct to you on that forum.
Any queries just lety me know these will not run hot like the old Dichroic type and are much bettter, but unfortunately they come at a premium.
But these look OK on the info that you have.
The ligting will be fine for use in sitting/ relaxation area in general.

Re: Non VW - LED Downlighters
Those are not too expensive at 30 euro a pair.
I may go for 8 and fit a dimmer.
